Hey guys I have the 36th anniversary Dimarzio set in my Goldtop lespaul and I really like them. They have that Certain clank of a PAF but the bridge p/u is still vintage yet slightly rude and crunchy and I like that plus it can still get very thick and heavy sounding drop d tuning with good clarity and string separation.

That being said I purchased an Edwards LP flametop that has a one piece mahogany body, thick Maple cap, is very acoustically resonant, has been upgrade with CTS pots and Sprague caps and has a set of Duncan antiquities that sound good but I want them to be potted with a little more drive I'm thinking in the 10K-12K range and wanted to try something different than what I have already in my Goldtop. I want them with aged nickel covers and potted since I play higher gain amps most of the time.

I have played the Suhr Aldrich bridge but I think that might be too much output as I still want some PAF clank if you know what I mean.

I have always been interested in MCP pickups and always wanted to try, Wade seems to have done his homework in the PAF genre so here is my short list.

Detroiter, Angel Dust, 2nd Degree blackbelt and others that I might be missing that fit the bill? BKP Rebel Yell's maybe?

I know the crowd here has some discerning ears and I am curious to what you guys have tried and heard in person regarding LP's and what you liked about certain MCP's pickup attributes and possibly others in the range of my description. I bought the 36th's on Rigtalk recommendations so I'm back to poke at your brains some more, He-He!

I had 36th's in my Goldtop too. Tried a few different PAF styles and wound up liking the Sheptone AB Customs the best. These were wound slightly hotter at almost 10K. Much more clarity and detail than the 36th's. Can't remember if they were potted, but they did not squeal at high gain at all. The Fralin HO pickup sounded good with great harmonics, but lacked bottom end. This would be good in a fat sounding guitar. Marshallheads were nice (bridge with A2 magnet), but liked the Sheptones the best overall.

Funny I have 36's set in my Traditional Plus and love em. I also have a set of Antiquities in my R7 Goldtop and they kill in that one too ;)

I've got a Detroiter set in my LP and they are great! Hotter than the WCR's in my other LP and not quite as lowend heavy as the Afwayu's.

WCR Godwoods. They cover a lot of ground. Not in the 10K+ range but they're plenty hot

It's not that I dislike what I hear with the SD Antiquities actually I was surprised at how they sounded. I am just thinking more aggressive with more output just for something different that are more pissed off.

I totally agree about the Dimarzio 36'th anniversaries prowess( and I am an SD guy), I think they sound great and would never pull them out of the Goldtop.

Thanks for the input guys I am really leaning heavily towards the Detroiter right now. I like clips of the BKP rebel yells but I put that pickup in the JB Suhr Aldrich category as a high output pickup. I'm just not sure I want or need that much output drive. I'll have to give the Antiquities some more play time but I'll keep looking.

The Detroiters are going to be a little on the dark side, so that might be great with a maple top. You may also want to look into the Bare Knuckle Abraxas or Mule pickups. Both of those will get you what you are looking for.

Wade does MCP Twrecks also if theyre still available

Motor City T- Wrecks!
"The new vintage style T-Wreck humbucker's deliver bone-crushing chunk, and wicked old-skool snarl, with a bite and attack all its own. THIS is the pickup that rewrote the book on vintage t-top style PAFs of the 60's and 70''s. Our limited-production T-Wreck's bring super-vintage monster tone back from Extinction, and pushes it into the 21st century with a short Alnico V custom proprietary magnet and our proprietary 7.7k scatterwind. With T-Wreck's, more IS more. Turn your favorite museum piece back into a vicious man eater. "Wreck" your favorite rig with a T-Wreck's, get your tone back in the hunt, and put those mass-produced wannabe vintage pickups on the run. Because T-Wreck's will rip inferior paf's to shreds.

There's only one T-Wreck's, and it's an instant vintage modern classic you have to feel to believe. The competition won't know what bit 'em".
These will be limited!

Orders are being accepted under the "2nd degree Black Belt page" until the site is revised very very soon. We are finally closing in!
Peace, Wade- MCP President

I have been wanting to try the Detroiter's in my LP. Currently has Afwayus, which are beefy and have a ton of low end. The 2nd degree BB wasn't enough output for what I wanted, plus when playing chords, specifically power cords I could hear each individual string instead of the "blend" with the BB. I just couldn't get along with the BB.

After doing some more comparative research it seems the Angel Dust is in my range as well at 14.5K ohms resistance, I haven't heard much discussion on this MCP pickup. I only found a couple of references to how hot the Detroiter was wound and it was noted Wade winds them to about 9.5K ohms, the description of the pickup really seems to encompass what I am looking for but I want to look a bit before I jump in to a purchase.

I don't think I would be happy with anything under around 9K so the T wreck might be out. My 36th's are over 9K and they are just about right outputwise but I think I want a bit more of a bump without pushing the mids too much which seems to happen when you start overwinding P/U's beyond 12K.

Does MCP offer aged Nickel covers? I didn't see that option on his site but I looks like he has pics of them.

The only other pickup that interests me is the Arcane Triple Clones maybe Reza can comment on how they sound in the output and PAF type clank tone.

So my short list is:
Angel Dust
Detroiter
Arcane Triple Clone

The Detroiter is hotter than other hot PAF pickups in the 9k range I've had. I know DC resistance is not a completely accurate way to describe this, but it sounds like something that's more like 11-12k. It's got a real upper-mid snarl to it.
Btw, I might be selling my unpotted Detrioter set shortly, but they are black uncovered.

The Angel Dust pickups can be touch and go... I had one in my US PRS Tremonti and the mid range was overwhelming. That pickup has tons of mids.

Just scour the classifieds on here and TGP and get a few used ones. Make some clips and compare them.

This description of the Detroiter has been repeated by a few users which really makes me want to try this pickup which I think I will.

The Arcane Triple Clone is also scatterwound hot above 9K as well, I just wonder if it is as hot and pissed off sounding like the Detroiter or a little more subdued/smoother PAF ish. I know the Detroiter is considered a HOT wound PAF type so...

Hey Reza I know you listed the Arcanes in your LP for sale, what do you think about them?

Let me know if you get rid of the detroiters pls. Looking for a set for my les paul.

I'm not sure how much the Motor City pickups run price wise, but you could call the Duncan Custom shop and have them wind you a pickup to your exact specs. MJ is a magician like that. :)
