Glad you're enjoying the pickup similarly as I have. It's a '70's Japanese PAF Copy (Matsumoko). Love the clips and I'm sure in person you probably see the difference in what good vintage pickups can do being inspiring to play. I'd be happy to send more to check out later

Vs a W8 it's totally apples vs oranges. From the clips it sounds to me like your rig is much more dialed in toward the W8 and other pickups in that output range. I get why many prefer it here as the Japanese PAF comes off in comparison a bit weak or underpowered, but you can still tell how there's a lot more personality/life and detail to the tone itself. On the other hand, with most of my setups being tuned more for low output pickups, hotter pickups like the W8 can sometimes come off bloated/overdone or messy in my setup if I'm not careful. I think they're just 2 different types of tools that need to be tweaked around a little bit differently, but not hugely imo

I find I got my most raw, aggressive, snarly sounds with low output pickups and maybe my thickest/chunkiest, most overall brutal sounds with high output pickups like the vintage Schaller's and Dirty Finger's. It's cool also to see a Japanese PAF put in a type of guitar you'd never otherwise see it in besides my own weird guitars I also put them in LOL. We need more of these outside the box combinations

Yes. Most people dont do a comparison like this because it is unflattering. I have done this with preamp tubes before, and they all have their own EQ and can easily be dialed in the same, but if you leave settings the same in the name of impartiality, this can be the case.

When I was wiring it up, I was a little disappointed with the thin little hot wire, and i was directly comparing to the Tone nerd where i had the beautiful vintage braid with the thicker hot. I was afraid the thing would be quiet.

The first palm mute I hit when i turned on the amp, I knew. For me, i was playing with the thing before I made the clip, and i could hear the lack of gain, and knew I could easily fix it. Basically, it was a lot easier to hear everything outside of it needing more gain, just because that is such an easy fix, that admittedly I wouldnt do out of integrity for the comparison.

And yes. I dig the fuck out of the way it looks in the guitar. It is a strange matching.

The truth of the matter is that the Wicked 8 is a badass pickup. But the thing is on eleven, when i need it on ten. I dialed in the amp pretty perfect for it to shine, now I will do the same for the PAF

We don't want to hear no stinking on the verge of breakup gain clips:thumbsdown::poke:..............POUR THE COALS TO THAT AMP with a boost and do another side by side clip....:D:yes:

Actually your clip showed the difference between the two pickups quite well, the clarity of the PAF was demonstratively apparent.:2thumbsup:

I have some plans today to make a few clips, sir

So you won't be wearing your TAN pants when you record the POUR THE COALS clip then????????????????:hys::hys::hys::hys::rawk::2thumbsup:
It is funny you mention that. I am working on covering silverchair tomorrow, and I have finally nailed how to do it with my current amp. But no. I think the majority of the clips today will be fairly nasty.

I am having a tough time with recording today. And the amp sounds amazing. But then i listen back to this recording, and it is dark as hell...

anyway, I will record some real clips later. I am just so annoyed right now. I have redlight fever, lmao

It doesn’t sound dark on my end. I actually think this sounds better than yesterday’s clip. I would just say in both clips I’d like there to be more gain. Maybe the pickup isn’t set close enough to the strings? I like these low output pickups especially close to the strings

That is a great idea. When i last setup the guitar, i finished with setting the wicked 8 to perfect position.

I have been fucking around with other stuff on the amp. That has really escaped my notice

Yeah I bet between getting the pickup height right and maybe just slightly more gain on the amp it could turn the tables possibly where most will prefer this one now. Will have to see

Wicked 8 is better in my preference !!

I bought a bunch of Bareknuckle pups to swap in my RI LP's. Blackdogs, warpigs, SS... and they are still in the boxes. The stock pups sounded way better than I expected with my setup. I was kind of shocked coming from EMG, and more recently Fishman actives. I still have no desire to swap them.

what's the diff between emg and fluence?

EMG are a little tighter maybe, a little less direct push into the front of the amp. The moderns are a bit more bass heavy to me, depending on the push/pull setting for the modern. I've only had experience with the moderns, but they have a bit more organic sound to the output, like if you crossed an EMG with a traditional pup. The EMG are straight up metal IMO. The Fluence modern kind of remind me of the EMG wired to 18V.

i bought the fluence strat battery backplate to use with my tyler midboost. no 9V battery routing, rechargeable via usb, lasts very long, and it has an LED indicator that tells you when it’s running low.

win!

I just uploaded a video without really watching it, lmao. But anyway. Hope it translates well. Fucking love this guitar, this amp, and this cab.

[I made a video before this, but I wasn't wearing pants, and well, it was a bit more than PG. So I put some pants on, and I think it really affected my playing, lmao.]
