I know this is a topic that has probably been beat to death but is it just me that doesn't hear it or can't find the perfect setup? i've been playing 40 years and i have had so many different amps it is silly. i've had all the king camerons (the atomica i regret selling) friedmans, bogners, diezel, mesa, evh tec many multiple times. recently i tried out the JEL 50 and didnt really love it along with a modded jmp. oh the money i have spent........

a few years ago i went to fractal land with a III for live use and there is good and bad, i can play a plexi pushed at a level that i couldn't play live or at home ( or dare i say an approximation of a plexi). I love plexi's but volume is an issue, i actually don't like to be super loud anymore and honestly can't play them out anywhere. I hate ir's and dyn ir's. i use a cab with a older qsc power amp that sounds better, but the amp in the room sound really isn't there. amp/cab vs axe/cab the axe loses and i've tried many different power sources.

Not a fan of attenuators either, changes something, stupid amount spent to try em out. I currently have a captor x for the 15th time, the attenuation levels are stupid.

Along with all of this i played a DSL and really didn't notice that much of a difference thru the same cab as the JEL. is it just my ears and i can't or don't hear the big difference. IS there really that much of a difference. I like plexi/800 and modded versions (80's guy). is the answer to just buy a dsl to get the amp in the room thing when i want it? Is a friedman or bogner that much better, i have a hard time hearing it. do i try the Brit 50 that has a master volume ( that JEL was blistering loud to get good tone)

I generally dial in all my amps for a similar sound that I like. So I think it really depends on if you really want different sounds or do you dial in for a certain sound. I found most amps can be dialed in to what you want, most differences comes in families like Mark sound, Marshall sound, etc… as well as options (NFB, fat, tight, etc…) on the amps. My 2 cents

Nope, there is not that much difference in my opinion, especially tonally. Most of the $$$$ amps will get you sturdier build quality, fancier aesthetics and a dash of hype and e-cred

I have my forever amp & guitar. Everything else is icing on the cake.
This one?

Have you tried the Fryette power station? It allows you to shape the sound more than just a plain attenuator.

That’s what I feel but don’t trust my ears.

I got over the whole perfect tone thing once I started gigging and learned nothing is going to sound close to the same room to room.

That’s one reason I went axe fx live. Easy setup and tear down , consistent sound even if it feels like something is missing

That’s one I haven’t tried, after an ox, boss, two notes, thd and a couple others I kinda gave up on it

Aside from trying the Friedman Jose and Marshall’s modded 1959, I second the DSL or JVMs

If you love plexi's and want total volume control there is only one way to do that. I suggest a plexi of your choice, Suhr SL68 MKII(which also has a great master volume) if you like the punch of 100 watters or the SL67 ran into the Suhr Reactive load box then reamp with the DI line out on the reactive load or tap the speaker jack with one of John's Iso Line out boxes then to the power amp of your choice, either a a large mosfet power amp that has 300-500 watts per channel @ 8 ohms so you will be like 150-250 watts @16 ohms and or Tube power amps like Fryettes' and or Peavey that have resonance of depth mods added to them for fine tuning. You can also use other Super Leads as a power amp if it has a loop or into the low input jack of the bright channel you just have to re-eq the amp as a power amp....take alot of the mids out then use the bass treble and presence to tweak the overall sound. The slaving will work almost any MV amp of your choice, it doesn't have to be a plexi, it gives you the power amp punch of a cranked amp then reamp by the power amp.

I also highly recommend the Suhr reactive load for doing this.

After all these years slaving is still very effective.

You probably never reached a level where you were happy with your playing, so instead of spending that time and cash chasing the hard way, you tried to fill it with expensive amps.
