i have a mesa recto (angeled!! ha!) cab,...lately i haven't been happy with the sound of my v-30's,..especialy the farther i get from it,..2 weeks ago at a gig i thought there was something wrong with it!..but of course there wasnt and just put it down to bad aucostics of the corner i was in,...took a couple shots of southern comfort and tried to forget about it,...now it's all i hear!!...so my plan is to add a couple new speakers to fill in the holes of my sound,...i know bogner (and others) mix v-30's with g12-75's,...from previous experience my amp (peavey xxx) and g12-75's dont get along at all,..so i am a little leary of that combo,...but i really like the sound of the evh celestions,..which are a greenback copy if my memory is correct,....so i guess i am curious to hear what others are doing,...

anyone have any first hand knowledge of ev or other speakers??...i know there alot cheaper!

merry christmas

There's a certain "ice pick" spot in front of any cab I've ever played through. Some guys use beam blockers that cover the cone of the speaker to tame those highs, you might wanna check into those. It sounds to me like you might like a cab loaded with all greenbacks. I had one once upon a time and I loved it. If you're gonna mix the V30s, I don't recommend mixing with greenbacks. The v30 would dominate the Greenbacks. I'd go with H30's if you want to mix with the v30's.

G12H30, Classic Lead 80's, and G12T-75's all mix well with V30's.

Go with the G12H30's if you want more of a classic rock sound. CL80's if you want a smoother sound. G12T-75's if you want more of a metal sound. The G12T-75's are less efficient than the V30's, so keep that in mind.

+1 I was thinking beam blockers too. I love my v30s but like everybody points out tone is subjective. I put a quad of older English greenbacks in a Marshall slant I had and my buddy was going on about how great it sounded but I thought the opposite, I thought the v30s I had in it sounded a lot edgier and more powerful, more aggressive if you will  . Maybe you should try out the unthinkable and mix em with some eminence legend V12s :D I probably sound cynical but you don't hear about that around here too much. I had a cab with them loaded before and it was smoother Than a V30 but lacked treble (which I always thought needed to be tamed in the V30s), in my mind I thought they'd sound good together but I've been proven wrong by my ears so many times that I'm due to have it happen again   Theyre a lot cheaper than celestions too

One of my Combo amps has a Classic lead 80 and a V30 in it. It came from the factory that way, and it balances really well between the two.

I currently have a V30 cab X patterned with the H30 anniversary speakers and it is a nice mix, not perfect but the best I have had so far. I had Greenbackas and with my high gain heads they sounded terrible. I also had the EVH speakers and tried them every which way, they were just too dark and really trimmed the high end out. If that's your thing they'd be great but not for 80s metal that you want to cut through.

My Willy had a great point about the Ice Pickyness and I will be looking into those blockers. I have yet to get around that with any combination. Just my 2 cents.

Maybe a 65 watt greeenback - like the Warehouse ET65 or a Scumback M75LHDC would mate well with your V30's...I'm thinking of swapping my G12H30's for one of those two myself...

G12H30 meshes well, ET65 gives a cool sound too. I did not like the v30 with the CL80...it didn't seem to change the sound in a positive way at all in my Randall 4x12

I've got ET65s mixed with V30s currently and while I like it, the ET65 seems to get buried by the V30. I've had better luck with C90s mixed with V30s.
