Yes. I would pay a lot of money for a true remaster of Aenima and Undertow with whatever studio magic was done on this record. I can't stop listening to it because of the production and now the songs have grown on me lol

I think Aenima sounds a lot better than their latest records. It's darker and not as crystal-clear - much more ineresting to listen to.
I highly doubt that a perfectly clear, sterile mix would help the music on Aenima. It takes away the mystery and atmosphere.

You're using a lot of pejoratives there. What's sterile to you sounds gorgeous to me. 10,000 Days production is not as good as this one. Aenima is good because yes, it has "character" in that it sounds a bit muddy and swampy and lo-fi and it fits the music just fine. But this album's production sounds leaps and bounds better to a lot of people.

I went on vaca for a week and got to listen to this album a bit on the beach, and in a “recreational” setting.
It sounds like tool to me, they have evolved, and I dig it.
Kuddos in a great album.
I’ve been listening to tool since I was like 13, I’m only 33 now. 46&2 was the first tool song I heard. Blew my mind. Been a fan since. A lot of my clean tones are highly influenced by tool, it’s all I wanted to play for a bit. Hell a lot of my dirty tones too. Got to meet Maynard a chat a bit when I bought a 6 pack of his wine for a meet and greet at Whole Foods years ago.
For how reclusive he was, he actually chatted to me for a few min about wine. Really cool.
I love tool!!! Rock on!!

  the song pneuma is just recycled riffs.

The rest is just a bunch of Hare Krishna music.

A common gripe from those who can't see the forest for the trees...

Maybe y'all should start a Change.org petition to ban Tool or something.

I heard a couple of songs off the album on my commute today. It's pretty cool, not really aggressive and there were times I thought, "Music to sleep to."

But at the end of it all, it was very interesting music. Ambient rock kind of.

Production, as others have noted, is stellar. Sounds really good.

One persons sterile is the next guy's HiFi, 3D etc....sterile to me is without character, bland etc. This mix certainly has character and is far from bland IMO. I love the clarity of the mix, just like my favorite amps have killer clarity.
Since you consider HiFi/3D sterile, I'm surprised at your name/sig....Diezel amps are very HiFi/3D sounding to my ear.

Smart way to weed out the disloyal and disillusioned listeners though. Don't let the door hit you on the way out!

You make being a fan of Tool sound like a cult, and I don't think it's that far off. "Disloyal"...so if you don't bow to the altar of Tool and like everything, then you aren't a REAL fan. That is just so damn weird. I know fans of bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush, Rolling Stones...all fans of those bands have albums and songs they like, some they don't. Sometimes entire albums they don't care for. But you are not allowed that in Tool fandom...or you are DISLOYAL.

MJK is their new L. Ron Hubbard. ;-)

That does not mean that this would fit Aenima. Everybody who has recorded a few songs or albums knows that.

"Has character" is a platitude that has no meaning whatsoever. It's undefinable and therefore pointless.
Guitar amps are neither hd nor hifi, so I don't know what that means. Diezel amps are not very clear. They have tons of bass, reduced mids and less highs.

I've had a few listens on headphones now and I keep coming back to listen again. To me it's not a 'classic' that will stay a staple for years to come, but Tool doing what they do, and I like it. The production is awesome, personally a shared first with Lateralus. What might be throwing a few people off is that Maynard is taking a backseat on this one compared to previous albums and he is less aggressive, actually quite feminine in his singing. The void gets filled by Adam though, who really get's to shine on this one. As a guitarist I dig it and I don't get why so many people on a guitar rig forum complain about that. :D

I hope the album and them touring extensively again will boost sales of Diezel amps, as Peter & Peter deserve every sale imho.

Diezel amps aren't very clear??? Really???? Well you must have gotten the 'mud' modification then. I've tried a VH4 for a good week before deciding that it wasn't for me. But I'd definitely put it in the upper region of amps that have really good definition and clarity. Maybe not that of a Wizard, but not much if any other amp has that..maybe a VHT/Fryette. I feel the VH4 that I played had really good clarity, and the way I dialed it in it was less compressed than some examples out there. Channel 4 is very compressed but I lived on ch 3 for that week trying it out. Sounded clear to me.
I guess if you dial in LOTS of Bass, scoop the mids and highs then you have the tone you describe. Certainly not how I dialed in the VH4 for my taste.

I heard the first 2 tracks last week, and finally went all the way through today. To keep it short and sweet - this is ambitious, abstract, unstructured, and highly detailed. Their least accessible album in my opinion, and also least aggressive. Impressive for sure, but quite different than their other albums IMO. Love the production!

This won't get nearly as many spins as Lateralus or Aenima, but for the right setting it's great and has much to offer that the other albums don't.

7.5/10

We need to make a gif or meme for all the smug Tool trolls who think their jokes about Tool fans are still funny.

I have owned and recorded the VH4 for a few years. Fokker as well. I think I probably know what I am talking about. ;)
Diezel is a fat wall of sound with lots of low mids and little high mids. All knobs at 12 o'clock.

Clearly you are a Diezel guy, but the one I tried out for a week must have been modded then...I was possibly trading an SLO I had for the VH4. I could get nice clarity, albeit a bit scooped for my taste but it definitely had a nice hifi thing going on through my cabs. But, my EQ was not 'all at noon'. The SLO was more 'hifi' sounding but with a boost to ch 3 of the Diezel I could get them fairly close.
