New user, New Diezel

Hey all,

I'm a new user here, I'm on the Boogie Board (Zodiac272 username)...


So I just got a Diezel Einstein, looks and sounds great. I was reading the manual, and it's not very specific about which output tubes to use. I've heard EL-34, 6L6, or a combination of both in an XYYX pattern. I have a ton of Mesa tubes, including Mesa branded Sylvania STR 415 and Sylvania STR 416 (6L6gc and 6CA7) which are great. Will they work? What range of mA is best for this amp?

For the preamp, I have a bunch of RCA, Tung Sol, Sylvania, RFT and GE NOS tubes that I like because they sound really good and last forever and are durable. Looks like all spots are 12aX7... anybody try 5751 anywhere?


Also, I was trying to open the amp up to take a look.... I took 4 screws off th back, and 4 off the bottom. the chassis was moving, but the grills wouldn't. Does it slide out the back? How to remove the back grill? I took the screws out, but it still seems fixed...

Hey Scott, welcome. The rear grill needs to be removed. Take the 4 screws out then put fingers in the little D openings and pull rearward, it will get a little stuck to the paint sometimes. I have used both =C= EL34's and KT77's with great success. I would suggest leaving it out of the chassis and ut on your cab and try different pre tbes. Slot one is most important, then #3 for channel one and then #2 for second channel super high gain channel. Look on Diezel web site for MA settings of power tubes or do a search on here, there is a ton of info on here regarding the Einstein. All in all it's a great amp so have fun with it.

yes I got the back open, and like RG955TT said it was stuck to the paint so will that it peeled a bit of wood off with it! haha...


now moving on to the tubes...

the guy I got it from said he had 6L6 in it, and I pulled them out, and they are short fat bottles with no marking, but look almost like a version of GE 6L6gc.

now to bias, do I stick the probe of a multi meter in the respective fuse socket and take the reading? then if adjustment is needed use a tiny screwdriver to adjust it to spec?

Take your pick...

Power Tubes.
EL34/6CA7: Aggressive, slender low end, higher total harmonic
distortion… Recommended bias setting: 30-35mA

5881/6L6: Great tube for clean sounds, good bluesy tones, also has
strong bass and excellent clarity… Recommended bias
setting: 25-35mA

6550: Very loud, very good dynamics, strong low end, amazingly
percussive… Recommended bias: 40-60mA

KT88/KT100: Similar to 6550, but very punchy with great clarity and
warmth… Expensive… Recommended bias: 35-50mA

great amp, thanks for the recommendation

I have a bunch of mesa branded 6CA7's (sylvania str 416), Mesa STR 415 (sylvania 6L6gc) which are awesome durable tubes that fall into that range. I removed the 6L6 that were in there and put in 4 older Siemens EL 34 (mesa STR 450) and they have a lot of sizzle and sound great and full.

with the 6L6 that were in it
I followed the bias check procedure, pulled the outer fuse, put ground probe in the black test hole, and the other probe in the left red test hole and my meter was set to 200mA and I got a reading of 40 mA

then same thing with other side and got 35 mA. The 200mA was the only scale on the meter that I could get a reading, otherwise reading "1"


Either my meter is wrong or it's biased wrong, because it's supposed to read "62" for the pair right?

Not a problem Scott, you are more than welcome in the elite BOD club.

If you're getting a reading of 40mA from the pair of 6L6s then you want to be in the vicinity of ~60mA pair wise to start with.
