I got this in Friday, just in time for my girl to be busy all weekend and give me plenty of time to play. I have been wanting a Suhr for the last year or so, and have been saving up for it. I wasn't quite ready to buy, but Rocket Music had one coming in back in May, and seeing that Sky Blue Burst was going to be discontinued, I pulled the trigger. I sent in my deposit to Dan, and finally paid it off. Making the last payment I had a little buyers' remorse. The most I had spent on a guitar before this was my used Les Paul Traditional. I was buying this guitar solely based on online reviews, and Suhr's reputation. I knew the specs where inline with what I liked, but still had no idea if I would like the guitar.
Fast forward to Friday. I get the guitar up stairs to my man cave, lay the case on the ground and open it. Absolutely amazed. Whatever I had prepared myself for, it surpassed. The color, depth of flame, everything was great. Now to plug it in and play. The true test. I played it for about ten minutes, and decided I needed to raise the action a little. Too low for me. I play a little hard, and like to feel the strings under my fingers. Nothing wrong with the setup, just not me. A minute later, plugged back in. Perfect. The neck is awesome. I am sold on compound radii. Low on the neck and high on the neck, it just feels right. You don't notice the difference other than it just works.
As far as sound. I noticed on all of my patches, I was turning everything down. There was just more of everything coming from the guitar. After playing over the weekend, I have realized that I like the tone turned down to around 8. This guitar is bright, but not in a bad way. Just more than I like, or maybe am used to. Not a problem. Now to the neck, and I usually don't play on the neck pup much. Dialed in some SRV type sounds. They ML's are present, but not piercing. Lots of push, or fullness behind then, but definitely keeping the strat vibe.
I really can't speak highly enough about this guitar. Halfway through the purchase I was really regretting it, and after my last payment I was almost sick in my stomach. There are so many things I could have done with the money. After playing the guitar for the last two days, I must say, it was money well spent. I am keeping my paul and my tele. My RG will be up for sale soon. No need for it any more. This one covers the high gain bridge tone and so much more, and feels right at the same time.
I also can't say enough about Dan at Rocket Music. If you are looking for a Suhr, or anything else he carries, he will treat you right. Enough of my rambling. Here are two pics I shot real quick this afternoon. As good as the pics are, the don't do the depth of the color justice.
Consider me happy,
Jason
