I found this at my local guitar shop and had to have it after playing it for a few minutes. It is a great looking/playing guitar! I cannot find a whole lot of info about Suntech guitars other than they were MIJ in the 70s and 80s. It is on par with my Edwards and Gibson - I love it! It is loaded with a DiMarzio PAF Pro/Super Distortion pickup combo. It sounds awesome through my Marshall - especially with a Fuzz in the mix. If you see a Suntech around - pick it up and play it - you might be surprised!

That is a sweet looking LP. One piece body? Brass nut?

That is way cool.. I love these old MIJ Les Paul clones!

My main guitar is a 1988 Burny LP Custom (MIJ) and it kills. I bet that Suntech LP kicks ass!

If I were to guess I'd say that's one of the nicer Matsumoku guitars. The blocks look exactly like an Electra I owned. Neat guitar.

the lettering looks very similar to univox labeled stuff from that era. i'm currently working on a tokai built hondo II standard lp copy. got the stop and pups installed. gotta finish the wiring and the nut yet.
the biggest problem with the post-lawsuit era copies is getting the parts to fit. if you order genuine gibson parts the dimensions are off by enough that you wind up doing lots of hand tooling to make them fit. it can be a pain.

This was one of my favorite giutars, bought it in 1979 and honestly have found few les pauls that were its equal. Had Dimarzios, that I would change..... Logo looked like something from a disco album but sweet action and neck, build quality was fantastic.

awesome! that's a looker!

Not much as they werent around that long. These were manufacured in Japan
and distributed by Suntech Electric and J.S. Kansas Acoustic guitars as I recall a company in Kansas. I purchased mine from the Toon Shop in Prairie Village Ks in 1978. It is my recolection that the Suntech brand was completely new on the Market and they were not cheap. Retail was close to $800 and due to a long relationship with the store through my grandmother (long time music teacher) $600 plus change out the door.
I havent seen anything outside of these dates from 78-84. Suntech put the most god awful logo on the headstock i believe to fend away the Gibson legal actions brought against other manufacturers like Tokai, Bunny and Ibanez, but otherwise the guitars were damned close to the Gibson with one difference, they were better..... I was told on a subsequent trip to the Toon Shop that the company had ceased production in the wake of Gibsons patent infingement suits and the Japanese manufacturer had been bought by Gibson to produce Epiphone and the owners cashed in their chips before they had their clocks cleaned. An interesting piece of info, Daryl Stuermer of Genesis played a Suntech from 1978 - 1984.

Let your buddy know, if he wishes to sale, I am a buyer.

Thanks for the lesson; as far as dibs, I got em lol. He doesn't want to sell it though.

Most Matsumoku LPs have thinner necks and are bolt-on
Curious to know from what factory this one came

Check the control cavity to see if its made of plywood.

Most, but not all. The set neck Uncle Mats came with some beefy necks. Electra had a couple models like that. If not Matsumoku then perhaps Fujigen.

Good to know
Either way, those Jap LPs are some of the best bang for the buck guitars out there
That's until people start realizing that and prices balloon up...
