Noise Gates?

Tried both ISP and NS2. Noise Gates pedals seem to suck tone no matter how hard you try (to my awful ear).

I just decided to perfect rolling off the volume on the guitar :D

I've heard things about newer versus older NS2's and how they're wired/built. The older, obviously being the better one. Have no idea when mine was from. It def choked the shit out of my tone. I was ready to deal with the noise just to have my guitar sound the way it should.

Yep, I heard something like that . Take a look here at 9:23

So we're officially seeking out "vintage" noisegates.
Tone-OCD, not even once.

I own both. Each of them have pro's and cons. I prefer the NS-2.

For many years I used a half rack space Hush unit in the loop. Now I just use a Behringer NR300 between the preamp and poweramp.

There was a lot of love for the MXR smart gate here back in the day..

I have a MXR Smart Gate (M135). Nice pedal, though I don't use it for a high gain amp. My Rockman rig is rack mounted and stereo, so I'm considering a Smart Gate Pro (M235) for that.
