NPD: RYRA 808

I´ve had my Tubescreamer spot filled by a random TS10 I got at my local shop for a long, long time and it does that thing well enough, but with some amps and guitars it can be a little on the thin side. I´ve never really bothered to dig into whether the various stock Tubescreamer models really sound any different across the board, it always seemed close enough for rock and roll and with the parts tolerances being what they are... but I happened to see a demo of the JHS Bonsai the other day and there seems to be a bit of nuance going on there. I´ve also gotten more into boosting stock Super Leads the last few years, so dialing in the overdrives and boosts is a bigger deal for me now.

Anyhoo, long story short, I came across this RYRA 808 which seems to be a well-regarded clone of one specific early 808 they liked. Is it any different from a stock Ibanez 808 reissue or one of the expensive vintage ones or any of the million takes on the TS, who knows? But I do like it quite a bit thus far, and for a hundred bucks it´s a cool companion to the TS10 with a spin of it´s own. I can absolutely see me pick one over the other depending on the context.

Anyone play one of these?

And since this is Rig-talk, after all, the RYRA sounds very much like George Lynch compared to the TS10 ;) A bit more grunt in the mids and maybe a bit more lows too.

I always preferred TS copies with bass controls as the stock model can be a little thin with some guitar/amp combos. Glad you are happy and I must add that silvery carpeting is not only a great tonal choice but your rug also looks very well maintained as though it was recently shampooed.

I can´t take full credit for the carpeting, this was furnished as a spare bedroom in the basement for the family that lived here before, but it is well maintained  I´d actually forgotten how nice and cosy wall-to-wall carpet is, here in Sweden that basically went away in the early 90s and never came back, but when I was a kid it was everywhere.

Interesting. That was a thing in a lot of places in the US during the 80's, at least in the northern US. Lots of places with carpet halfway up the wall. Living in Tx and Fl I haven't had a place with any carpet in 20 years....it's all tile or for me now, raw concrete, LOL.

Almost every home in Sweden has laminate wood floors in most rooms, probably for the last twenty years or so. Tile is strictly a bathroom thing, and concrete is for garages

But yeah, getting back to the 808 and Tubescreamers, I had a few pedals with various fuller/bassier options available earlier. The Visual Sounds and Sparkle Drives and Keeleys and what not, circa mid 2000s. Never really got into that sound for my applications, but it depends a lot on the guitars and amps.

The concrete is great for us cause mud+boots+dogs....you ain't gotta take your shoes off in my house, LOL.

+1 on the VS stuff. I had the Visual Sound J&H thru the mid 2000's and ran the right side of it for many years using a strat and 4 hole marshall. The bass boost switch was really handy for that setup cause it could be a little light on bass at lower volumes. That was the first decent pedal I owned...used it from about 04-05 to 2012 when I got a Blue Note, which has a "fat" knob. I still have the Blue Note and use it for lower volume gigs or as a standalone when having a pedalboard is too much hassle. Otherwise I been rocking Wayne's Gladio SC clone for cranked gigs since last year. Great pedal but not as much gain inside as the Blue Note with the hot switch flipped.

I've got a TS10 that I used and abused forEVER until it recently died on my. No adapter or battery swap will bring it back to life.

That said, I do really like to sound of the TS 'Mini' - which I understand is based on the 808 circuit with the 4558 chip.

I had the ryra klon clone they make. It was really good. I imagine this 808 is great also!
