So I am speaking with my guitar tech and we start yacking about Bradshaw and John Suhr and the conversation moves towards Sykes and what he used for the 87 Whitesnake album.....of course I state MK III Colis and he says no

He said he met Sykes at NAMM and John stated in the studio it was an early 80s JMP 50 watter.....I just do not hear this though.

He does know his stuff and is a killer guitar man but I aint buying this.

. I have an article with Sykes in an old guitar rag about it being a slaved Boogie. The srticle never mentioned the model and later on it was mentioned on Johns website that it was the coliseum heads .Its also possible that the album was double tracked a few times and maybe he added a marshall track or two... Who knows!

With that said... If i am wrong and John did use something else... It was a highly modded JMP 50 watter or one using a shitload of boosts because I am familiar as MOFO with the old JMPS and they don't souind like that stock.
I was told they did the rhythm tracks (bed tracks) in the States...then because John and David really couldn't get along anymore, John came up here to Toronto to finish the solos for the album. I guy I knew, who worked at 'The 12th Fret' here in Toronto, said he personally brought over a Marshall head and helped John set it up...I don't know how many solos were done with the Marshall on that at CD, but I absolutely believe the guy who told me...and I think his Mesa tone just kills on the rhythm tracks.

That is a killer story Adam!

I would be willing to believe that as well but the Main tone has got to be the MEsa IMHO. You would not be the first one to say this as I remember Trace from Voodoo amps talking about the Marshall being used in Canada.
I'm sure Drew will chime in!! He has the scoop on everything Sykes!!!

He didn't say about the Marshall being modded that I can remember...but judging from the sound, it was either modded or boosted to all hell with pedals. ;)

I always heard it was the Marguerite's head- If I have to explain its not worth it.......If you think I'm high get a hold of Kenny at Solidbodyguitar.com..........

John used a Jose modded 100 Watt Marshall for the "Is This Love" solo. The rest of the album is the Boogie Coliseums slaved together with a chorus between them and then doubled for the rhythms.

Thanks Drew!

I just got through listening to several cuts and no way is that a Marshall!

Not at all.

Drew knows John Pretty well and If you have ever played a coli MKIII, you'll know for a fact that what he is saying is pretty much spot on.

I don't doubt it...the solo to crying in the rain does not sound like a Marshall to me.
I'd be curious to find out which is which. ;)

When Pat (Mentoneman) and I did the 1st High Gain amp shoot out video, Sykes' tech was there and talking to me about my Boogie and confirmed that Sykes used the same exact amp with Strategy 400 poweramp.

EDIT: Guess I should've read the rest of the responses.

Man a Coli AND a Strategy400 is some serious freakin volume :scared: :D

Sorry Gents but methinks Drew has got it down being that he knows John Personally.
also:

The interview I have with Sykes says the he slaved 2 boogie heads together. he used the preamp of one and the poweramp section of the other.(with the chorus probably between the 2 like Drew said) If Sykes used the Strategy 400, methinks it was after the album.
