Sorry Gents but methinks Drew has got it down being that he knows John Personally.
also:

The interview I have with Sykes says the he slaved 2 boogie heads together. he used the preamp of one and the poweramp section of the other.(with the chorus probably between the 2 like Drew said) If Sykes used the Strategy 400, methinks it was after the album.

Killjoy

Man a Coli AND a Strategy400 is some serious freakin volume :scared: :D

Bro I need a Coli 300 like a hole in the head but damn can you just think about the MK IV slaved out to a stereo fx rack and then power two 4x12s with the coli?!?!?!?

Freaking RAWK :D

Yeah I can Imagine since Ive done it in my condo lol :D

The scary thing is that the EQ on the slaved head works on the boogie amps when you plug into the effects return, so you get more EQ options!!!

INSANE SOUNDING!!!

Man a Coli 300 would actually blow a hole in your head :D

I know that my MKIII sounds crazy good if you run it Wet/Dry via the slave out into an FX unit then to a poweramp powering another cab. I need to get another two Marshall 4x12's to go with the one i already have, then i can hook up a full blow W/D/W Rig of Death!!!!

That is possibly my fav thing about the Boogie!! The EQ works when you use it as a slave amp. How cool is that!!

There is a Strategy 500 on the Bay right now :D

Man I need to tell the wife that the cars are leaving the garage for the new jam room

So I am speaking with my guitar tech and we start yacking about Bradshaw and John Suhr and the conversation moves towards Sykes and what he used for the 87 Whitesnake album.....of course I state MK III Colis and he says no

He said he met Sykes at NAMM and John stated in the studio it was an early 80s JMP 50 watter.....I just do not hear this though.

He does know his stuff and is a killer guitar man but I aint buying this.

When Pat (Mentoneman) and I did the 1st High Gain amp shoot out video, Sykes' tech was there and talking to me about my Boogie and confirmed that Sykes used the same exact amp with Strategy 400 poweramp.

EDIT: Guess I should've read the rest of the responses.

Zach (and Pat), that was me at that shootout--but I was never Sykes' tech. I do work with him though.

John never used the Coliseums live. He recalls using the 50 watt Marshalls for the first Blue Murder runs. For later Blue Murder tours he used a rack with a Dual Recto, a Tri-Axis, a Mesa IIB and a Mesa Strategy amp.

Hey Ralph. Was Drew the one who revealed that Sykes used 65 watt speakers to record most of the album with?

And i can't wait to get my MarkIII back from Boogie so i can slave it up with my MarkIV. I picked up one of those Thiele 1x12's with an EVM 12L200watt speaker and i can't believe how good it sounds for a 1x12. And i grabbed a halfback 2x12 which also sounds huge for it's size, it took a little tweaking though.

Actually Mark Cameron told me about the 65's and I know someone who bought one of Johns old Cabs from the Blue Murder days and it was loaded with the 65's.

Steve has 2 of those 1x12 cabs down in the studio and they sounded INSANE with the MKIV in stereo!! I was wondering why I was busting my ass carrying a 4x12 all those years when the 2 1x12 sounded just as massive lol :D

I cant wait to hear what you think about your III when you get it back!!

John did have Celestion 65's in some of those custom made 4x12s he had. They were never used to record with, though. The cabs with the 65's were sold several years ago. We didn't know they had 65's in them until I saw somebody re-selling one on ebay a year or two ago. The custom cabs he is using now don't have 65's in them.

The albums (WS & Blue Murder) were done with the Mesa half-back 4x12's with the stock speakers--which I believe is a mix of Mesa Celestion 90's on top and EV's on the bottom. John is not real picky about speakers.

How much do you rule?!!

Thanks again Drew!! Just for the record, My coliseum MKIII through Front loaded MC90's sounds close enough for me!

IMHO, John had the ultimate tone back in the day!! Also didn't hurt that he is a MOFO of a player!!

Thanks for all this cool info Drew, i have wanted to know about this stuff for a hell of a long time. I think me and Ralphie have exchanged countless PM's discussing info we'v found out about Johns rig during the BlueMurder/WS days, and its nice to find out everything from a reliable source!

Thanks for the info. I have a stock 2x12 now with the MC90 and EV bottom, it's really the only time i like a mix of speakers. Lots of guys are realizing how good those old 4x12 are and they're getting bought up. The 4x12 was too heavy for me so i went with the 2x12 and 1x12. The little Thiele 1x12 are just incredible little speaker cabs.

Now, i wonder just how they miced up the cab back then? I wonder which speaker we are hearing on the WS/Blue Murder albums? Yeah, were real dorks about this stuff. :D

 Aloha, my bad on the tech part...

Here is my sad attempt at some Sykes tone with my MKIII Coli. To those of you who have heard it before, I still dig it, and will do some with better playing and real songs when I get the rig back.

Sounds great Zachman, that clean is just awesome. When i come out to Hawaii the first round is one me. I think/hope we will be coming out there this Winter sometime.
