as far as amps go on the black album?

Was it the usual slew of exotic, multiple offerings available only to the mighty ones?

I'm not sure if it was Bob Rock magik, but there's something about the tone on that album that i will always hold up high. Personal pref i guess?!

Let me know ur thoughts...

i read an interview where they said they used MULTIPLE high-dollar rare amplifiers, sampled all of them together, and then played through that sampling.

they then used the individual amplifiers for inspiration for their songs.

dont have the literature, but im definately not making it up. ran across that a couple years ago.

I'm not an expert on Mesa (or other) amp sounds, but it sounds like a lot of very tight layers of Mesa sounding amps. I'm sure they mixed in some different amps and probably slaved some amps into different power amps, but in the end I think it's just the thick layering of very tightly played tracks and the excellent production on that record.

I think a lot of people try to find that sound just by themselves with one amp, but it really is the studio layering and tight riffing rather than that one magical amp that will give you instant-Metallica™®©. I noticed one can get quite close to the intro of Master Of Puppets with several high gain amps, as long as the playing is tight, exactly on the beat and with all palm mutes in the right place. Hetfield would likely still sound like Hetfield even with a different mix of amps...

It's all on Monty Jay's site, but it was a mix of:

Mesa Mark IIC+
Mesa Mark IV
Some other Mesa Preamp
Old Marshalls (José Arendondo JCM 800s?)
Not sure... Haha.

Most of the sound .... sounds like the Mark IIC to me.

sounds like a Mesa Quad layered many times to my ears.

Then a pair of SM57's on the speaker. One straight, the other perpendicular.

GREAT sounds, but not really elusive in any way IMO.

Yeah they used quads......yup quads with an odd numbered serial number like the one I have.....yup......I could sell my odd numbered serial number quad for around $3000.....................yup.............$3000 to nail metallica.
No other map can do the black album but odd numbered quads but I could let mine go for $3000.

A good way to get that Hammett vibrato and tone is to slam your fingers with a hammer. Seriously, is Hammett in the band just so Lars can bully him around?
