Old vs New Recto's

Cool video. Both amps sound good. Very cool collection Fluff's got there, too.

However, a lot of youtubers do this strange thing when they start turning knobs where they barely touch them at all but act like they're making significant tweaks.

"Hmm let's adjust these mids and see if we can get them to sit more nicely" and then they turn the mid knob from like 3:00 to 2:58.
"Hmm yes very different obviously now let's see how it sounds when we really crank the Presence." Presence is turned from 9:00 to 9:04.
"Hmm ok ok now we're getting somewhere, that was nice but maybe if we add more gain." Turns gain from 12:00 to 12:06.
"Oh yeah that's WAY different WHOA."

Dude it has sounded exactly the same this whole time lol. Not sure why it bugs me so much but there you go.

Never got to compare those exact 2 side by side but I’ve played the fabled Rev C, which is more celebrated, and the multi watt and the multi slays it IMO. The Rev C is much more tighter for sure but the MW has way more aggression. I couldn’t imagine the Rev D being that much more different.

I've never really liked the tones Fluff dials in. I always find the mids are off and he's so afraid of dialing in some low and sometimes really aggressive high end.

But then again, I think that's because I expect his tones to be "metal", because that's the whole motto he started his channel as. But he's never really played that. And honestly, the more time passes by, the least metal he's sounding, both in tone and playing.

I thought it was a good demo :dunno: I’d call the orange channel a toss up but the red definitely went to the multi

Yeah, it does show the differences well.

I guess I'm just a bit biased, because I don't like this Fluff guy's channel.

They both just sounded like a wall of static and fizz to me. Meh...

I don't like his channel either, there's something about him.... sounds like he'd rather be having tea time than playing guitars... not that there's anything wrong with that.

How is he supposed to sound? I'm always curious when people say something like this. As if he's supposed to be yelling into the camera.

No, IDK dude. I just don't care for the guys content most of all.

Having owned several iterations of the recto, many at the same time… red channel on the old rectos rev f and earlier vs the multi watt, you can get close. However the orange channel on the old rectos… the new versions are nothing like it and can’t obtain a similar sound. The new ones are way more honky and nasally on the orange channel. And… it’s a rectifier, it’s supposed to be a scooped sound.

I find my main disliking for fluffs sound is the dude dials way too much mids. I mean anyone who runs a 5150 with the mids on 6, yuck, that shit is not for me. If you’re wanting your entire mix to sound like a duck that’s a way to do it.

Is it the tone or him personally?
Both.

Not him like personally, but he sometimes does come off as a bit unlikeable with his whole "yeah, I got friends in high places" attitude, but that's a bit of a nit-pick.

But like I said before, it's just the tone he dials in and the stuff he plays aren't really what he claims they are. Not to come off as a TRVE metal guy kinda jackass, but does thing he's playing sound like metal to you? Kinda sounds like ETID, which isn't bad, just not what he's selling his channel as.

I can’t say I’ve ever noticed that attitude with him or him claiming to be some metal channel but we all see things different. I thought it was a good strait forward answer/demo of a question I’ve had for a while that others might find informative as well.

I think the multi watts gets way more shit than they deserve. They sound great. Fluff generally doesn’t dial in this the way I would though. He’s not a totally metal dude and I don’t think he’s ever really given that impression. He’s talked about his love of Bad Religion many times on his channel. He’s kinda a general aggressive/whatever music dude, there’s plenty other channels out there for metal too.

I agree there. The Multi Watts are fantastic amps.

I also like Fluff. I poked fun at the "he barely moves the controls thing" above in the thread but in general he seems like a laid back dude who just likes high gain guitar and has found a way to make a living at it. Yeah he does some of the youtube algorithm bait stuff but the fact that he's done that is likely why we all know who he is, because that algorithm bait has put his videos in all our feeds.

He's one of the few youtube personalities that doesn't actively annoy me. He doesn't sound like he's doing an impression of a shitty gameshow host, sports commentator, caffeined-out kid's TV show character, or like he's doing the Fluff Amateur Comedy Hour with every video. He's just a guy who is articulate enough to explain things well. Yeah his tone is usually not the tone I dial in, but I wouldn't say it's bad. It sounds to me more like he's used to dialing tone for mixes rather than solo playing, which means generally he's going to dial in a sound that's more grainy and has less full low end.

Some people just like lots of midrange, nothing wrong with that. Plus, it cuts in the band mix very well. In a mix the guitars are all about midrange anyways.

Nailed it. Fucking awful sounds people get with a 5150 and mids that high. These dudes need their ears cleaned. Even EVH himself didn’t run the mids over 2 or so. Ridiculous

Nonsense. Complete nonsense. A 5150 with its mids on zero still has more than any recto with them cranked up; and still will have no problem cutting in any live mix. Guitars are all about good tone and sounding great in a mix, not necessarily “More MIDZZZZ”…. All of these tones on recordings that people think have soooo much midrange, don’t at all.
