the timbre of his voice is an aquired taste for sure.... Not everyone digs him. I like his work in dream theater, and i really dig his solo project work ... I think there should be a vote for aquired taste....

A talented guy but neither him nor his band are my thing.

changed

I think he's a great singer for his music. It's definitely an acquired taste and can get to be a bit much sometimes but the dude can sing his ass off. Very good range.

I prefer Michael Sweet from Stryper for the win!!

I like that vocal style, though more so in a power metal setting for me. I respect his talent/ability. but i think he is definatley an aquired taste. I would rather hear, Tate, or Michael Kiske, or someone like that though.

I'm a casual DT fan, like some stuff, not everything but I've never had a problem with him. Anyone who says he outright sucks is retarded. The original DT singer, now that guy sucked !

"vocal injury"?

Wtf happened to him? I thought he sounded not so bad on Systemic Chaos. Not so great on earlier records.

I don't care what anyone says....I am not the biggest fan, but you cannot deny Elements of Persuasion. That solo release kills DT.

I love James with Dream Theater. He works very well in there. Now when you here him do the Floyd, Metallica and Maiden songs, he just sounds horrible.

in 1994 he got food poisonng and while vomiting, he ruptured his vocal chords. its caused him a hell of alot of problems since and nearly quit DT during scenes from a memory tour. then he got them back during six degrees tour, but to make things a little easier on him they dont make him hit as high notes in new recordings.
