which one of these amp is the best ALL around amp, also can do other styles besides metal, i know these amps are for the metal fan base, but im wanting something that can do brutal drop tuned metal to southern rock, to country dont want a amp that basically good for one thing.. or what are peoples favorite peavey amp out of these and why..
ultra
classic series
ultra plus
valveking
XXX/3120
JSX
5150/6505
butcher

5150 II can do all that you list. I know because that is what i used mine for - blues, classic rock, and progressive metal. It paid my bills for years and did what it was supposed to. Had a rectifier diode shit on me, it ate tubes roughly every 3 months at the time, but i still own and use that same amp today.

5150's are very versatile for the money - you cant go wrong there. Everyone at some point in time has used/borrowed/played one.

IMHO the amp i think that would serve you well would be a roadster :)

I'll 2nd the 5150. It definitley will do the brutal stuff you need, but on the crunch channel with a boost can get you in the neighborhood of some decent classic rock tones too.

I can omit three from that list right now. Those three are Valveking, XXX, and JSX. My bet would be on the 5150 II, especially if you get it modded.

why would you omit the XXX??? isnt it basically the same as a ultra plus???

Good question. Skynyrd toured with XXX's a few years ago from what I remember.

Personally, I would look at the XXXII. Pretty much a JSX with new cosmetics and a couple other tweaks. Loop has a metal clip of one on here somewhere.

i know that black stone cherry ben wells uses XXX 2.. in us tours and 3120 over seas..

The 5150 is a great amp but for versatility I'd go with the Ultra Plus, it sounds similar to the 5150 but has better cleans.

The new XXX 2 is just as good, if not better than the Ultra Plus.

The Classic series and Valveking are better for clean to mid-gain tones. The XXX and 6505's are GREAT for heavier tones. Do not rule out the XXX. It can get buzzy, but you just have to EQ it right. It has active EQ on the high gain channels, so with the knobs at 12:00 it's the same as full up on a passive EQ circuit. You can cover alot of ground with these amps, and they're built like a tank!

For the best "ALL ROUND" amp out of your list I'd go with the XXX or JSX. Both will do metal to country without a problem. I've never played the Ultra series so I can't comment on that amp but the Classic won't get any where near heavy enough even with a boost and the 5150 just isn't voiced to do classic rock and the cleans are a joke for country. The ValveKing's got some decent cleans but the gain is pretty harsh to me.

It's a deselection process, like dating. My thoughts:

ultra - Pretty solid amp. Maybe a little too compressed sounding, but near the top of the heap for all-around. Best value.
classic series - A Classic 50 head would be my #1 choice for what you are describing. You won't get 5150 gain, but everything else is good.
ultra plus - See Ultra. Plus the color changing logo is cool when you switch channels.
valveking - never played one.
XXX/3120 - XXX was awful. I would much rather have anything else from the list. Congested, dynamics change when you flip switches. Yuck
JSX - OK, but too bright and thin for my taste. Supposed to be a classic 50-ish sound on the 2nd channel.
5150/6505 - Best gain sound of the bunch, hands down. The clean sucks for clean, but gets a cool pushed sound and also crunch w/ button pushed.
butcher - never played one.

Also, Peavey made an amp called the Ranger. It was supposed to be sort of an evil Fender Twin. It's a pretty solid amp, too and comes in a 2x12 format. The Delta Blues 210 is/was a cool amp and sounded great through a 4x12, too.

For what you want, I think an Ultra/+ or Classic head would serve you well.

XXX can do all you need, a proper retube and bias gets rid of any harshness you could hear....also turn up that master volume

Ultra+ is a great amp & super cheap!
I love my ultra regardless of the pricetag
However, the clean does 1 voicing: crystal clean; it does not give character cleans

XXX sounded great when others play it, but I hated playing it... Perhaps it needed tubes& bias

The XXX is an awesome amp really nice clean channelwith a nice overdrive it will get you some rocking tones. It will do metal with the best of them as well. Like mentioned above the eq is active on the crunch and lead so it is not as easy to dial in, but when you do its got it. Kinda of like the recto that alot of people cant gel with but patience will yeild some wonderfull tones out of the XXX. Very underated amp I think...

How about the XXX II? It looks goofy, but the original XXX was a winner and the new version might be even better.

5150II for dirt/cruch, and Classic 50 for cleans/different crunch. That setup lasted me several years.
