to tell the truth all those are great amps....only thing i have not played is a valveking

To all those saying why I would omit the XXX. My statement is based on my personal experience/opinion, and when I played a few they all seemed sterile, no dynamics.

The JSX always comes off as terribly thin.

As with any "Which is better/best" threads, all you are going to get are personal opinions, and that is mine. Who knows, maybe all I have played are bad ones, or just through bad cabs with bad guitars. :dunno:

Ya, Satriani started with a XXX, and made it worse imo. as someone mentioned, proper biasing really helps the XXX. I have one, and it's served me well for many years.

JSX needs the master volume set to a minimum of 8/10 to get it sounding HUGE and tight. Playing the amp with a high channel volume setting and low master volume is receipe for thin sounding gain.
So yeah, JSX all the way.
Three seperate channels with seperate EQ's. Clean, mean & scream.

i think im going to go back to the ultra plus.. i owned one not even a year ago and hated myself every day for selling it.. there is one within a 2hr drive from me.. i owned the ultra + and 6505 together and the ultra + imo was the better sounding amp.. but i sold it and kept the 6505, and to be honest ive not been happy since that mistake of selling the ulta +.. but the only thing is i cant keep both amps, since i lost my job a month ago and only can afford one.. so what im thinking is selling my 6505 for 500, buying the ultra + for 360 and having extra cash and the ultra i liked in the 1st place.. or i can trade mine for a XXX located like 15 min away, XXX has been modded as well sounds super tight, and its based around the ultra plus.. i think.. i think i like the ultra series amps better than the 6505 series.. but thanks everyone for the advice..

I am going to third this, it's very common for guys to not get the XXX\JSX because of the active eq. Check out my JSX clips and see if you still think it sounds thin. I don't have the amp anymore but for what you described it is the best of the bunch and I have either owned or spent a ton of time with all of them not just in store demo's. The 5150's would work fine if it weren't for the totally waste of a clean channel and you said you wanted versatility. THe Ultra would be fine too as would the Butcher as it's just a JCM 800 kind of amp. The 5150 is the go to for the drop tuned stuff but the JSX can do that as well as some nice mid gain rock tones and a really, really good clean tone. It's a compressed sounding amp and that's the only reason I ditched it. Had it for about five years though :)

I also have the JSX. Your right on the money. WIth 6l6's instead of el34's and the amp set right this amp is awesome. It also has the best clean channel out of any peavey head.

I almost forgot about the 6l6gc's but that is the key to this amp imho. With el34's I get the thin comments, with 6l6gc's its a beast. It's odd because the XXX sounded much, much better with el34's in it and it's a similar circuit.

I hear the 6534+ with EL34's has better clean channel that 6505's and still gets nasty when you want to to. Plus that crunch switch on channel 1 gets into a nice EVH gain tone.
