I can say that the most overrated piece of gear I have actually owned is hands down the Diezel Herbert. Not saying it is a bad piece of gear because it's not, but definitely overrated.
Big claim, mate... I'd be interested to hear the full story on this one ;)

No joke. Maybe you bought one used and the tubes were going out or something else was wrong with it? I can see saying-"not my kind of thing" but not, "the most overrated piece of gear I have actually owned."

Not defending his thoughts as I like the Herbert but Jason makes his living in the business and knows his shit. Dude can demo an amp to the ground.

The Herbert is the first thing that popped into my head when I read the thread title  Don't get me wrong, I liked a couple things about the Herbert but for the price it's just not what people make it out to be IMO. I'd take a VH4 any day over a Herbert....any day :D

Vox amps. Everyone loves the early Van Halen tone, but every Vox I ever played didn't sound like eddie

Most Mesa's. I can appreciate that they are hand-wired, but I hardly believe that makes them special.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion though. :D

How about how over rated some things are like gold pin preamp tubes? or when the same generic chinese tubes are purchased bulk and rebranded by some other co and u will have some swear they are so much better! As for gibsons , I love them but just dont care much for the quality and craftsmanship in the last decade as they have started shipping guitars with terribly sharp frett edges and other flaws that u shouldnt have to deal with on a Gibson, and they have started using two piece bodies on many models that were designed as a 1 piece to cut costs etc. It forces me to buy used or go custom shop route.

Gear. All "gear" is over rated. Just plug in and play and make it happen.

Bare knuckle painkiller pickup. I really hated it. :aww:

Diamond Nitrox = Turd

I think the only piece of gear that has disappointed me was the Mesa Recording Rectifier:

1: Plug it straight into your mixer (like it says in the manual) and you get the most horrible guitar tone in the world. Not even Batio would enjoy it.

When I bought a Palmer DI box it helped A LOT, but it's an extra expense. I dont know... Maybe I missed something a long the way.

2: You need a Mesa 2:100 power amp to able to release the Modern setting on the gain channel. Thanks a lot... Like the 2:20 and the pre amp itself didn't set me back enough.
so this, only piece of gear I genuinely couldn't find something I genuinely liked about it. Different animal into the 2:100 though, which I didn't have.

Yep, overrated and overpriced.

From a usage/musician point of view: any guitar or amp that are over 5K$.

They may still be a viable investment from an ROI point of view though.

Rivera KR7 - I tried to like it. I really did.
ENGL Powerball I. This lasted one day. Sold the next.
Mesa Rectifier Recording preamp. - sounded like total crap, except through my 2:90, but was always so loose. totally useless for me, and did NOT sound like the Recto I currently have, or several others I have.
just loose and flubby.

LTD guitars. I have never found one with good tonewood. seem like they are getting lighter and lighter and less toneful, and they are resorting to dumber artist endorsements for totally crapola guitars.

And I disagree about GIBSON.
I have had quite a few Gibson guitars that I actually hated very much. I sold them very quickly after buying them, only buying them due to too much hype and stupid people's reviews (BFG, for example, chambered Studio's). hate their chambered stuff.
I have had several Gibsons that were absolutely amazing, and sometimes I think they get a bad rap for their pickup choices not matching a persons style. For instance, i recently got a Les Paul Custom. with the stock 498t, it sounded weird. but now, with a Motor City pickup in there, it is hands down my go to guitar, and the cream of my crop right now. I'm using it constantly, live, recording, everywhere, and it gets the sound I have always heard in my head, pretty close anyways.
I wanted it for years, finally got it, was slightly disappointed, but now I love it.

my PRS guitars, not so much. I debate with myself selling them all the time, and just did one of them.

Gotta agree about the Herbert. Don't care for the VH4 either. Diezel's ear is not mine, that's for sure.

Agree about Orange. Horribly overpriced for what they deliver tone-wise.

Tom Anderson/Grosh or anybody else making a bolt on neck guitar that's basically a hot-rodded Fender that sells for 2-3 times what a G&L or USA Fender do and sound and play no better. Granted the Fender may need a setup but after a good setup will easily play as well.

Definitely this. I tried it in two different guitars and it made it sound unbearably awful. Not, "It doesn't sound $120 better." kind of awful, but a, "What the fuck is wrong with this pickup." kind of awful.

Roland Electronic drums, and electronic drums in general. So expensive to get into the good stuff, more then any real kit.

The pricing on these is amazing to say the least. It sucks because I would much rather play the drums than program them and my old TD-7 kit is just plain worn out.

"Overrated" is such a narrowing term. Overrated in "My terms" or "for a type of music" is a lot closer. The music landscape is so wide, you just can't define overrated. Eg. The Dumble ODS or the Klone Centaur does not do anything special for me, but there will be guys telling it's the best thing since the invention of scrambled eggs.

Disagree with you there. I felt that way for a long time and thought how many Strat and Tele copies does the industry need. Then, I bought an Anderson. Now, there are three. Now, I am sold. I wouldn't pay up for the high priced quilt tops and that, but as far as quality control, detail and playability, Fender has a lot of catching up to do. Me, I would rather have one awesome feeling and playing $2500 Anderson, than a half dozen mediocre guitars. But, that's just my opinion.

Over rated gear is the stuff that I am guilty of buying into the hype on. Simple... if I am dumb enough to drink the kool-aid then it is my fault. I have not found anything that was really over rated. It may be popular in a type of playing I am not in to or some trendy shit like relic guitars that I don't get.

That said.... I think more good gear is 'under rated' since it is not hot in the trendcore internet forum hype machines.

Hype machine being brought up... Mesa has a damn fantastic hype machine. The adverts for the Reborn Rectifier make it seem like that thing will open the gates to sonic heaven and then give you a blow job at the end of the night.
