HAhahahaha!

I agree with many here. I think some that are considered great guitarists are more likely great songwriters, and the songs that became huge I don't even like but since they sold so many they are put into that category.
I know most here admire Gary Moore and rightly so, but I still say he's underrated because outside our group in general most people have never heard of him.

I think I’m gonna go ahead and nominate Mark Day for most underrated guitar player. Everytime I watch his videos I think that’s the level I wish I could be at.
Cheers Mark
Heck, for that matter, (if we're talking youtubers and review guys), Pete Thorn is a PHENOMENONAL guitar player.

Agreed Tom,

1 great song can cement a mediocre artist and hammer them down our throats over and over.....it's the business. But I think we all know that.... and that's the great thing about being a bit 'older' and living thru maybe the best years that Rock and guitarists will give us. We know our Pete Thorns, Tim Pierces, Andy Timmons, etc, etc...... are the guitar players.. don't need 20,000 fans, bras on stage and aqua net to prove it.. :)

I still love songwriters.... not all can do it no matter their ability to play guitar. To me, that's why I prefer very simple, straight forward, 4/4 songs.... my soul feels it... I don't need 200bps to feel it... music is as much the space between the notes as it is the notes played... ala... Moore, Gilmour, Haynes, etc. Cheers my friend. All very subjective of course... especially in these times.

Underrated IMO:
Glenn Tipton
Elliot Easton
Terry Kath
Glen Campbell

Overrated IMO:
Bonamassa
Morello
Kerry King
Joe Perry

you are right, shawn tubbs is an awesome player. I also watch rick grahams youtube channel just to watch his skill level which is like no one I have ever seen. technically, I don't think there is anyone who is better than that dude. I have picked up some cool licks, techniques, etc from his vids. also that suhr endorser mateus something. man, he is a great player.

overrated, as stated above, c.c. deville, most the shred dudes. I know I said rick graham above, but I find his technique videos interesting. I am talking about the guys who cram as many notes intio a lead as possible, to the point that it is just one big blurred out sonic assault. but not a cool sonic assault. I like players that have feel, like jimmy page!

Underrated: Oz Fox (Stryper).
Michael Sweet is just as good, if not better because he sings along with playing lead lines.

Underrated: Tony MacAlpine, both guitarists in Kix, Vivian Campbell, Rudolph Schenker

Overrated: Steve Vai (I think the guy is super talented but as someone else mentioned, I get bored sometimes with his playing). I'm a huge KISS fan but Ace is overrated too.

Underrated Guitarists:

David Gilmour
Chris DeGarmo
Adrian Smith
Tommy Vetterli
Mark Knopfler

Underrated-er....Michael Sweet

He plays a lot of Stryper solos, and he's every bit as good as Oz.

David Gilmour

Adrian Smith

Mark Knopfler
These 3 are really not underrated, given how often they appear in 'best guitarists' lists.

Underrated:

Doug Rappoport: Guy has classic style with a modern attitude and has a great touch and can shred, but still be musical.
Steffen Schackinger: Good melody and tone.
Ian Thornley: Excellent slide player and can rip, yet plays and writes the part for the song.
Pete Thorn: Great musical skills for writing great melody and cool riffs. Can punch in some unexpected shred lines and make it work.

Definitely Pete Thorn. Great player as well as a really cool/nice dude that loves music and gear.

We are talking about art here,so it's always purely subjective.

I am a huge fan of Piet Mondrian. But his most famous works are so simple compared to obscure old masters.

That said,Satch is obviously very well thought of. But as already stated above,he bores me.

Rick Hunolts work turns me on far more.

Many bash Kirk, but damned if you don't just know his classic solos, but can hum/sing along with them.

I totally disagree on Dimebag. Guy was awesome, and wasn't your "cookie-cutter" type shredder. He had a very new style, sound, and pioneered a generation of "new" heavy metal. He was one of a kind, for sure, and had the chops that were on "A New Level", (no pun intended).
