Overrated guitar players.... Underrated guitar players...

Underrated (at least, undermentioned): Bumblefoot, Carl Verheyen, Jimmy Herring, T.J Helmerich, Brett Garsed, Dweezil Zappa

My three most underrated players are:

Michael Romeo, Alex Skolnick and Vitto Bratta.

All sick players, they have everything a great guitar player needs!!!!!!!

I don't think Hendrix can ever be over rated. He is above such petty concerns. His live recordings have so many levels of genius. From sonic and dynamic control, second to none and just incredible phrasing coupled with super swinging and soulful rhythmic dexterity. I've never heard the electric guitar just flow out of someone and show us their soul to the same level as him.
I think the guys from earlier Skynyrd, Ed, Allen, Steve and Gary, are under rated as great guitar players vs being members of a popular band.
I also think Paul Quinn from Saxon is under rated, possibly Graham Oliver too but I'n not 100% sure who played what on the records. Really fantastic tone and phrasing on those early Saxon records.

C'mon really!? Warren De Martini is hardly underrated, who are you kidding here :gethim:

He is just a hero of mine and I will always feel that he deserves more adulation than he gets. Just sayin'.

Napalm, I love including Andy leRoque. One of my main influences since Fatal Portrait.

Along the same thread. Underrated:
Michael Denner (Mercyful Fate)
Hank Sherman
Chris Degarmo (queensryche)
Michael Wilton
Joey Tafola
Jim Matheos (Fates Warning)
Victor Arduini
William J Tsamis (Warlord)

I know I'll be flamed for this list. But these are only personal choices.
Overrated:
Joe Bonomassa
John Mayer. (Muzac in 12 bars)
Jack White (Gahd, he annoys me)
Jake e Lee ..post Ozzy-Badlands
John Petrucci (Great technician, but can't write a cohesive song since body building and beard maintenance takes all his time)
Eric Clapton ( stole too well in the beginning and had nowhere to go)
The biggest one for me is...

Jeff Beck. (Bores me to tears most of the time. All the repetition of Yngwie without the need to be in tune)

I think we are starting to blur the line between “underrated” and “unknown” I think to be underrated it means you are a well known guitar player but doesn’t get credit as being a good/great player. Maybe the Edge could be considered Underrated

Old guy here, 55 years old. Hendrix will always rule my world. Van Halen changed things, but it was EVH's technique that was innovated, not his tasteless solos. Onward and upward Yngwie, Dimebag, ...... but Jimi had it all and without him we'd be listening to cowboy music.

It wasn't until I went on these guitar websites that I learned everyone doesn't't agree that Hendrix brought it.

Eliot Easton , Euroboy aka Knut schriener, Capt sensible aka Raymond Burns, Ron Rontrose Heathman,
Johnny 2bags Wickersham Caddilac tramps days ..all underrated to non existence

I knew Ron Heathman back in my Seattle days. Real nice guy and great rock n roll guitar player.

Euroboy...Anyone who can rock the Texas Rodeo intro while standing on the shoulders and hands of the audience is under rated in my book...

I hope Michael Lee Firkins has been mentioned as underrated, monster skill player but can write some memorable music as well and also always has killer tone (first album was EPIC/REF tone).

Some Canadian Underrated guitar players

pete lesperance
Jeff Martin
Jag tanna
Jeff Healey
Kim Mitchell

Exactly, this isn't a thread about the unknown. Hank Sherman and Michael Denner are not underrated AT all WTF is wrong here. Turn your brains ON and stop taking your stupid pills, keep taking the other meds you've been given.

I think it's more about being under the radar, and not as well-known, as they should be.

I agree on Shermann/Denner. I grew up on Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, though I much prefer Larocque/Blakk. Them & Conspiracy are still my favorite dual guitar albums of all-time!
