I'm 40, and lemme tell ya, I had music in my life since I can remember....

Funny thread, it took me back for sure...

For some reason when people talk about the 90's.....all I can think of is that Group Candlebox.
What a good band. Best of that period for me.

One thing I can say though is the day I heard the 1st 4 chords of Smells Like Teen Spirit - I knew a welcome change was on the horizon. And how very true that was - RHCP, Soundgarden, AIC, and so many more. Just HAMMERED the glitter-glam metal scene and I was so f*ckin` overjoyed

Now doubt that the music scene had become so commercial and predictable that a change was due, and these bands HAMMERED the glitter-glam metal scene as stated. Unfortunately, they did it with poor musicianship, crappy chops, badly written songs, and the soul sucking melancholy/pissed off/take all the fun out of music attitude this era is known for.

Things have gotten a lot better lately IMO. The problem now to me is oversaturation. Say what you want about the big record companies controlling the airwaves, they did at least act as a filter for most of the crap. Now, anybody with a Zoom pocket recorder and computer is putting music out there, a lot of it is shit, and it's very difficult to sift through it all to find the diamonds in the rough. Also, I liked it when you had to buy the entire CD if you wanted to hear a song. I know, it's way old school vs buying (or stealing) individual songs. I used to really enjoy buying a CD for one or two songs that I really liked and then getting to discover all the other material on the album in my own way. You really got a picture of what a band was all about and what they were trying to do in a big picture way with buying the entire album. But what do I know, the last new music I bought was Death Magnetic and before that, :dunno: . I've re-purchased a bunch of old stuff but not much new.

honestly metal had to die off--it was getting too much about looking like a girl and lost the chemistry musically that made it happen.
metallica, nirvana,....just seemed like ugly angry loners that couldn't score chicks so they wrote music to complain, which many people related to. but at least it kicked the gay out of rock.

amen...I was tired of the 80's near the end there. It got so gay and rock music was getting so formulated and stupid. Someone needed to flush the toilet on that chapter.

'77 to '87 was my favorite decade.

AIDS=no thanks. I'll take the 60's or 70's all day over any decade after. Big fan of the pop culture and music of the 80's and 90's. 00's and this decade thus far are completely unoriginal. Hardly any new ideas in music or film.

I arrived in LA in 86 was in the center of what you speak. Everyone partied to the extreme BUT many of my friends from that era are dead or really fucked up if they didnt pull out of it. Very few of us are in decent shape. Heroin speed coke everywhere. Loose chix letting you stay with them as the paid the bills. I will safely say your better off not having lived through that era. Im still in LA and still rocking out but its so different.

Graduated in '85, had a Les Paul and a Marshall, played in a band and thought I was great...and listening back to old tapes, man did I suck

Also, I remember chicks with the bush!...Damn, So thick I had to leave a trail of bread crumbs to find my way outta that thing! ;) :D

Agreed, but at that time?? I wanted dirty sounds, more grunt than polish, and ya, I was one of them lost, angry, pissed off, confused cats coming out of a formal education to a world of....

.......nothingness.

So it goes, we're the lost generation, thank you Tyler Durden.
Mo :D

PS - but the acid definitely kept me, um, busy for the good portion of the 80's, no doubt... The big hair bands were more tolerable with a head full of sidney.

  One good thing is most women in the 90's started shaving. A thick bush isn't that bad though as long as it doesn't stink like a Mexican fishing boat.

definitely the 2 things that were the most debilitating elements of the 80s were coke and aids.

i'm blessed that i didn't die from either
you wouldn't believe some of the stories

anybody do palm springs or the river for spring break back in the 80s?

today's party crew is a new level of reckless blatant abandon

70's porn style man, the meeting of the shrubbery. The forest impact. Deep woods. More fluff than muff.

Ah, the good ol' hairy days!!

+1

For years I've just thought I wasn't into any new movies or music, seeing live acts too because I had just grown out of it. Settled into my married, suburban existence. But I really believe there also hasn't been anything to be excited about in live music (on a local level) or movies for years. It's kind of sad. I wonder if younger people feel a void or it's all relative to what your surrounded by at any given age.

I'll be 44 soon and although I look back and sometimes fondly remember "the old days", threads like this also make me think about the people who did experience consequences and who aren't around now to reminisce.

This! Class of 1983! Just turned 45. I shouldn't be here! I feel like the prostitute that was forgiven by Jesus!

There were some great musical times too. I had the best playing time ever when I played in Black Sheep with Willie Basse and Todd DeVito. I had to be clean in that band because they were both in NA and it allowed us to be focused and play at the top of our game... There are videos somewhere of this, but I don't have them. Would love to get a copy from either Wilie or Todd...

So, that's why they call it HAIR metal. I always thought it was...nevermind

Ahhh the 80's.
I grew up in the rust belt in the 80's. My Dad lost his job as Production Manager of the world's largest heat treating company when they shut the doors.
Unemployment in the area I lived in broke 18%. Many large manufacturing and heavy industry companies disappeared. Home values plummeted and foreclosures were rampant, sorta like the times we live in now, but at the time it was fortunately limited to the rust belt area. Very intense era, watched my parents file for bankruptcy and lose their life savings and our family home, foreclosure, etc. Dad got a job managing a small foundry and bought another house, but they closed up a year later and we were out on the street again. I started working full time nights at a restaurant when I was 15, and going to high school during the day, giving everything except gas money to my parents. I somehow managed to graduate a year early but could not afford to take the time off for commencement lest I lose my job, so I got my diploma in the mail. I did the best I could to help out my parents until I turned 20 in 1985, and by then I couldn't take it anymore and had to live my own life so I moved to Arizona. I went 8 weeks before I could find any work. I lived in a house with smashed out windows and no hot water with a bunch of guys I didn't know. I slept in a sleeping bag, on an old mattress I found in the back alley that I dragged into "my" room. I had my wallet stolen, in it my last $42.00 and my ID. I finally found a job five miles away and walked back and forth to work until I saved up enough to buy a car at auction. I had sold my car in Milwaukee before I moved, to buy a one way plane ticket to Phoenix. I somehow managed to get an apartment and make some headway in life and got married in 1986. We fought almost daily for about two years. My wife was a cop. I got pistol whipped a few times, seriously. Didn't think we would make it but last May we celebrated our 25th Anniversary. Things got better in 1988 when my son was born and we managed to buy a house, but in early '89 because of the owner's shenanigans, my company got raided by the Feds and shut down. While unemployed, I got mixed up in a high speed chase ending in a shooting... too long to tell the details here, but I was in serious trouble for a few months until I was cleared, really just in the wrong place at the wrong time!
SO anyways, the 80's weren't all parties and good times for everyone. They kinda sucked for me and I'm glad they're gone forever.

Someone should make a movie about your life.

I was way to young to participate in any of the late 80's partying here..
Back in the day of All Age shows with the 21+ section caged off from the younger section :aww: With the occasional cool enough person to pour you a beer in your cup through the fencing

I remember looking through the fencing with envy thinking when I get older I will be in there..
Then when I was finally old enough it was over :bash:

The partying was still going 80's style here at the shore until the late 90's the only difference there was less drugs and more alcohol but every night was filled with chicks with their guard down on vacation or working a summer job at the shore from Ireland, Russia ect, ect, looking to have a good time.. so no complaints here

Like the party's and women ever ended ?
That never changed .... what changed was you.
It is just as easy to find drugs and willing young women today as then....if anything there is more now.

So true. I'm so glad I found a great woman to settle down with because I remember being in my early 30's looking at or knowing the guys in their 40's at the bar and thinking I never want to be that guy. If I hadn't met my wife I'd be in serious danger of being just that guy now ;)

But I would have graduated to more classy and elderly populated rock n roll establishments   Divy joints and punk rock, wannabe dirtholes I started hating in my 30's.
