Partying in the 80's

Yeah--I did Palm Springs for Spring Break and/or Memorial day weekend. Zelda's and Pompeii were two places you were GUARANTEED to pull some hot tail out of... like shooting fish in a barrel.. too easy Drill Sergeant!

Graduated HS in '81 and picked up Guitar around '85 and took to it pretty quickly( was gigging within a year on rhythm and on lead about a year and a half after that) Played alot of the cool places on Long Island(mostly cover bands) but never had any designs on trying to make it. I was working and going to school full time and having a blast. I had a bunch of money( Club bartending gigs paid HUGE in addition to other things that I had going on) and a quality education and the thought of dropping it all to take a shot at music just didnt make any sense. I was pretty good but there were TONS of guys who were alot better and going no where.

One thing that I did consider was going to GIT. Back then, I used to practice no less than 3 hours a day and that was with a full work and school schedule. I figured that at the very least, I could devote a year to guitar and come out an absolute monster. As I said, no interest in being a rock but I loved playing guitar and wanted to be the best player that I could be.

As for the rest , I had a blast. I was out constantly, checking out every cool band in the tri state area. I had cash, nice cars and a constant flow of hot women and life was really really good. I was never crazy excessive with the booze, drugs and partying( There were definitely moments though) and Im thankful that it was never an issue.

I spent a couple of summers out in Hollywood for a time and it truly was an experience. The music, the women, the vibe is something that really cant be explained because no matter how much myself or anyone else could try to tell you, You really had to be there to get it...

That was one of the main things I didn't get about the 90's. What good was it to be in a band if you weren't enjoying yourself? Why were those guys so miserable and WHY did they get even more miserable when they made it huge and became filthy rich? :scared: Plus girls didn't wash their hair and dressed like slobs and ate way too many cheeseburgers if you know what I mean. The guy who works for me is 31 and has been working here for 16 years. He loved the cheesy, glam bands as a kid and their videos. He complained through the whole 90's about why the chicks tried to look hot and dress hot in the 80's and how women in the 90's were the laziest, most boring decade and that was HIS glory days.

OUCH! Okay, I still love the girls I got in the 90s, even if that does hit home pretty hard. I think a lot of people in the 90s grew up loving the glam bands. It just worked out different for them when they tried to tee up something for themselves. 90s bands rocked in the same way 60s bands rocked. The music was there! Unfortunately, there were a bunch of dirty hippies and self-hating musicians who died at age 27 because they weren't what they fantasized themselves as becoming. Who would chose it? No one. That's just what happened back in the day. You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose. ....Somethin like that.

I remember some of the 80's. :D

You didn't have to be a famous rock star to get all the chicks and drugs you wanted. You just had to play in a band.

Good times...

graduated HS in 87, but hadn't even picked up an instrument yet. Needless to say, the party scene is something I missed by a mile. The area where I grew up was utterly devoid of a music scene of any sort to begin with.

90's music was infinitely better IMO, as long as you learned very quickly (as I hope most did) to not even bother listening to FM radio.

Like the party's and women ever ended ?
That never changed .... what changed was you.
It is just as easy to find drugs and willing young women today as then....if anything there is more now.

Sorry man but if you were not there you don't get it. Things change over time.

What has changed is the amount of freedom you had back them compared to now. You could drive home drunk - get stopped by the cops and they asked you if you thought you were alright to drive. OK go right home then would be the response.

Freedom was the key. From the 60s - the 80's you had a big sexual revolution going on. To score major chicks you did not even need to play in a band.

1950's to 1980's were the pinnacle for America. This place is like a jail compared to how it was back then.

It was almost unheard of to have the kind of sick crime we have today with the exception of the occasional infamous serial killer.
There was a lot more innocence.

There was no herpes A,B, C, D, E etc.... Never heard of any sexual diseases that could kill you. Freddie Mercury was the first prominent case because there were few sexual diseases that anybody acquired. Crabs was about the only one I heard of back then.

And the chicks dressed to kill with fucking big hair. Oh yeah ! It was like taking candy from a baby back then.

Oh and the drinking age was 18 BTW. Oh and you could smoke anywhere you wanted. Etc.. etc...

:) I was there, I am 46.....drinking and driving ? I am more than familiar with the system and how it changed. I did not bring up alcohol in my post ....but only see alcohol as a other drug.
If where you are living does not have as much open sex as here I am not going to guess. Never had a problem getting women then or now. Most of the women I date now are in their 30's. I have lived in 36 of the states and in most of the major city's in the US. I see open free sex more available today than ever in the US. More so than the 60's and way more than the 80's. Young people today are very open minded and much more liberal sexually today from what I am seeing. There very much is a anything goes attitude. Just because you were not aware of sexual transmitted diseases certainly does not mean they were not around. Look at the statistics .... the numbers are really not that much different. I grew up in Detroit during the race riots ....no one is innocent.

I grew-up in the 70s and 80s and did NOT do drugs and drink. But I had long hair and played in metal bands. We did everything from Queensryche, to Alcatrazz, to Rush, to Cinderella, etc, etc. I miss those days. Everything was "bigger". Our PAs, lightshows, stage dress, etc. It was awesome. It's just not the same anymore. The clubs just aren't as happening.

And the chicks of the 80's? Oh man... all that big hair and lingerie. Mmmm... yummay.

For some reason when people talk about the 90's.....all I can think of is that Group Candlebox.
What a good band. Best of that period for me.

Amen brotha! Even though I'm an 80s child and always will be, I LOVE putting-on some Candlebox or AIC and friggin jamming along at LOUD volume. "Arrow" and "Man in the Box" are my faves for doing that.

AQUA NET Pink CAN...BC Riches, Charvels, Pointy guitars and $300 Gibson Les Paul Customs... In OC/LA there was a major concert just about every week... KNAC Nights... Plenty of girls willing to go around...

Funny,, I wished at times I would have been around in the late 60's early 70's, and kept some of those killer amps.

'member "Rockers" in Tulsa?.... My 1st REAL mainland gig. 1987. Ahhh, the good ol' boys at Tulsa Police Department.....
