I liked the 90s for the dark humor
is it just me or did the 90s kill innocence?
I mean there was a childlike sense that life could be a party, then everyone became self aware and eventually apathetic

I graduated HS in 1985 and the 80's were pure magic for guitar-oriented music. Everything from Pat Travers, to Yngwie, to Satriani, to Gary Moore, and probably 1000 other examples - or course kicked-off by Van Halen. I've always had mixed feelings on the term "hair metal" as in the 80's and early '90's there was no such term. I think that word originated in the 1997 time frame and has a lot of inaccurate references. The glammish stuff like Poison, Warrant, Cinderalla, was not considered "metal" at the time because that space was occupied by Iron Maiden, Saxon, JP, Metallica, etc.

I graduated high school and started playing clubs in '87...good times! I just caught the last few years of it, but that was enough. I wouldn't have made it out alive had I started any sooner.

'87 grad as well... You summed it up. Although I played in thrash bands through that time so the women weren't as abundant but still there. I cant imagine doing the shit we did then, today.

I was 18 in 1983, this is from circa 88-89 at the starry night in Portland Oregon, there were killer rock scenes all over the country back then, I was probably 23 here, I did manage to play at the Legendary Whisky ago go once, but all the hoppla had died down by then, I can't believe I posted this picture

Yeah. That is a great point. It was so cool how each "category" of music had a range of guitarists who spanned from top notch to sub-par.

In neo-classical you had Yngwie, Gilbert, Vinnie Moore who were untouchable, but there were other guys like David Chastain, Joey Tafolla, Alex Masi - who seemed to be at 80~90%

In rock, you had DiMartini, Lynch, etc., at the top followed by the guys in Kix, Helix,etc., who were 2nd tier.

In british metal it was Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Schenker at the top, followed by the guys in Saxon, Whitesnake (before Sykes), etc., who were less talented.

so many categories and you could instantly hear who the top guitarists were in each one, and who was struggling to keep up.

Don't get me wrong guys, I did my fair share of partying in music school around 2000, 2001. Even set myself up with a couple nice threesomes( ), and used to date a girl who from what I gather is now a model for some clothing company. I can also find good music in most decades and I really liked the songwriting of the 90's.

I just wish I didn't learn how dangerous the lifestyle was from such a young age, because I was always scared to let loose because of od'ing or getting AIDS or some shit. Oh well, probably for the best because I do have a very addictive personality. I'm young, healthy and my liver's intact. But oh, to live one day in the life of Bon Jovi...

I really liked the songwriting of the 90's.

Fuckin A. There were some great rock song writers in the 90s. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, AIC, the Pumpkins, NIN and you had the 2nd coming of Ministry too and etc etc etc. And the Punk scene went thru some MAJOR changes in sound.

But theres something beautiful about 80s punk rock

I luv'd the 80's. Spent a shit load on aqua net though this pic is the 90s (my wedding, looked like a vid of "November Rain" )but the hair was the same, got me a lot of stories from random acts in the clubs, bars and concerts etc. Dont think those days will ever return, just glad I live through it all.

Graduated in '87. Got more ass in my teens in the 80's than through most of the entire 90's. Was a horrible decade. Especially if you liked metal. I'm not talking poison, but actual metal. I can't count the number of bands I knew or played with who would go on about being anything but metal. Would they play heavy down-tuned chug music..yes, but Oh no, it's not metal, were alternative. Kiss my fuckin' ass.

I love hearing about the sad gigging jobs today and then they bash the 80s...................we got paid $1200 every Sunday at Harbor Park in Middletown and all the food and booze we could consume and it was not a sauage fest

I came up in the tail end of the 80s and early 90s. There are things that I like about both decades. AIC changed the way I saw music over night, but I never considered them to be a grunge band. I do miss the desire to be the best you can be at the guitar. I see bands today that marvel at my band's tight on stage delivery and can't stop commenting on it. (we range from 35 to 40) I just laugh and tell them that they should have been around in the 80s.

Mid 90s. I'm in the middle with the long hair. We partied like it was still the 80s...lol!

A lot less hair but still trying to throw down like it was 1990!

Class of 84 here... and I have to say that I liked the late 70's early 80's rock & metal better than the hairspray crap, it seemed that everything was just being rehashed. I guess it is what it was though, but the early Scorps, VH, Iron Maiden and the like were the real deal. Point taken on the party seen in the mid to late 80's it was way out of control 90's were the burned out hangover.
