I saw him do a guitar clinic many years ago, right when he was writing songs for his new project, Mr. Big. He played some of the tunes for us. He was incredible and very funny.

What was that sound at 1:42-1:46? Seems to be some pedal, but what was it?

Ibanez airplane flanger. I had it and hated it. Buy the ADA flanger for $100 more for similar sounds. Much better pedal

Or get an HBE Frostbite Flanger. Awesome pedal!

Did HBE go out of business or something? Seems to be hard to find stuff about them online anymore. I really liked the Frostbite and the Detox EQ. They had a nice sounding compressor too.

Didn't they make the Plank Cranker pedal?

Caught Paul and Bruce at G3.
Amazing guitar work is an understatement.
Great Persona as well.
Now Get Off My Lawn.....

Saw them live in a small club in Cleveland years ago, before that acoustic song became a hit. I was right in front. Enuff Znuff opened. never heard of them before, and haven't heard of them since. Also saw them open for Rush on the Presto tour. They rocked.

Paul is also a huge Rush fan. Has a Rush Tribute band called Sigmund and the Seamonsters with Portnoy.
"Cygnus & the Seamonsters"...

Saw him at a guitar demo in the 90's (back when local places still had this sort of thing). Very funny, entertaining, and incredibly talented. He played / sang a cover of Paula Abdul's 'Straight Up' that was pretty spectacular.

I took lessons with him privately at his apartment on Sycamour in '86. The guys has the ear of a jazz pianist. Just staggering how deep his talent goes.

I was at GIT back then, and took some open seminars with Paul. Along with the talent, what struck me most is what a genuinely nice guy he was. Considering that he was KING of that place back then, it would have been easy to let his ego blow up, but he couldn't have been any nicer. He couldn't have been more than 19 or 20 at the time, but really had a handle on life in general, let alone the music business and guitar.
I lived down on Yucca st back in 87 - 88 while I was going to GIT and remember sitting in on a small group lesson from him. As expected the guy was a beast, I could only just get my head around some of the stuff he was doing, freaking amazing. What you're saying about his ego is spot on. In a place and at a time when it seemed like everyone you ran into had an ego big enough for 10 men this guy was good natured, easygoing and humble.

Saw him last night in NYC and as the OP say's "WOW!" Paul has chops beyond chops. His tone was really good to. He and Sheehan never fail to bring the goods.

Watch this for yet another side to a great great musician...

I saw him live a few years ago and was blown away. Serious chips and a fantastic manner!
Truly inspiring.

I was at that show, saw Mr. Big at the same venue a year or so later too.

I'd really like to see Paul solo, I'm a big fan of his solo stuff (much better than Mr. Big IMO), and his solo set lists are killer! Awesome covers, and great selection of songs from his own discography. He hasn't toured North America solo recently though....

I did not like his newest solo album that much, with each release he gets farther and farther away from hard rock. Get Out of My Yard was probably the last one that I'd say I loved all the way through. Still like the other newer ones, but there's a lot of fusion/jazziness on them.

He inspires me every time I see or hear him on my own playing--plus he is a nice guy Ive met him a few times
