Peavey Triple X and Celestions

Howdy,

I've got a 2004 Peavey Triple X, which is a nice amp. However, the Celestions I'm using just ain't makin' the grade. The Egnater 4x12 Armageddon Cab has 2 G12T-75's and 2 Celestion Egnater "Elite 100" speakers (K-100's). The amp can use 6L6's or EL34's. I'm using 6L6's for now.

I HATE these speakers with this amp. Any suggestions? I play 70's-80's hard rock and old school metal. (Priest, Scorps, etc) Thanks!

IMO, go find and old Peavey 5150 cab. That amp sounds fantastic through that cab and the Sheffield 5150 speakers. Now some may poo poo that but I ran that amp and later a JSX through those cabs for several years and loved it. Check out bubbastain'ss splawn clip, he's running through those sheffields.

IMO, go find and old Peavey 5150 cab. That amp sounds fantastic through that cab and the Sheffield 5150 speakers. My XXX and JSX both loved Greenbacks.

If it's a good cab, I'd put the 75's on the bottom, and slide two Greenbacks in up top. It'll warm things up for you and add some punch quicker.

My XXX's and JSX always got along well with a standard 1960 cab with 75's, but only with volume. I take it that's the problem you're having. 75's/100's loud = great, low volume = shit.

Those are pretty well-built cabs, I wouldn't ditch it. Take my advice above.. Start with swapping two speakers first.

I had the same problem, but with V30's. I swapped out 2 and put in Greenbacks up top, and it was a huge difference. Loved it. I decided to try all Greenbacks, and haven't owned a V30 since. Greenbacks are now made in the UK, and have been since 2018, if you buy new.. I lucked out and got UK-made through Amazon for $99. I guarantee you'll love Greenbacks.

I use a Randall 4x12 with Greenbacks, and my Engl Artist sounds punishing. Granted, I'm still old-school thrash and some drop-D. With a good boost, and 10-band EQ, Greenbacks WILL get pretty tight!

Absolutely! I once ran my Kemper with my Engl Savage profile into a backline Marshall 425 with GBs and I loved it. It was so tight and crunchy. I just got a 1960B that I'm thinking about swapping some of the T75s for Greenbacks just to get a bit of that vibe. I love the vibe of them, even for high-gain stuff.

Those 425's were one of Marshall's best sounding cabs.

Nothing crunches like a Greenback. And it don't take much to wake them up. Killer at lower volumes to boot.

People used to scoff at Greenbacks for high gain, but even Celestion's website states "It's an ideal guitar speaker to bring drive and definition to modern high gain amps".

I have a JSX and find it matches really well with my Recto Std straight/slant 4x12. I originally tried it with one of my Genz Benz G-Flex 2x12's and didn't like it. It may be that I'm used to playing through 4x12's.

I put some WGS Retro 30’s in a 2x12 I used with my XXX and they sounded great!

Just the standard Greenback or try the EVH one's which are primarily rebranded GB's. His old 5150 Cab, 1200 Sheffield model speakers were modeled after his original worn out GB's but at 75 watts apiece. Like I said, they won't get alot of love around here but when I ran my 5150's, my XXX's and my JSX...they all went through those cabs and sounded fantastic. They also sounded good with my old GB loaded Marshall 4x12.

And conversely, did not sound good with my Marshall loaded GT75's cab. In fact I moth balled that cab to storage for years until I got my JVM...which sounds amazing through the 75's and the V30's. In fact I hated V30's for years until the JVM. My only two cabs left are the 75's 412 and a V30 loaded 2x12.

Again, that's just my ear an my opinion but I loved those Peavey 5150's cabs - with those heads. Had three of them all from the first year or production and they were made with Birch. No clue if they changed or what not through the years but the one's I bought were Birch. Look at it this way, most of those old 5150 cabs go for next to nothing...cheaper than buying new speakers in most cases, might be worth the try.

Yeah, I can imagine that combo sounding like scooped dogshit, with the low mids of the 75’s, and flat response of the 100’s. You could add two V30’s in place of the 100’s for an Uberkab setup, which sounds killer for heavy tones. I have a Splawn cab with two V30’s on the bottom and K100’s on top that sounds great. Hits like a sledgehammer. Either way, I’d always put the V30’s on the bottom. I personally think they’re obnoxious when they’ve up in your face...The Peavey cab with Sheffield’s isn’t a bad idea. They’re dirt cheap and they’re killer cabs. My buddy had one that sounded as good as anything else he had, and he’s got some high end shit. Also, as these guys said, you can’t go wrong with Greenbacks. IMO Greenbacks rule in any situation. For what you play, four Greenbacks, and you’re set. For something darker and warmer than Greenbacks, G12-65’s are also awesome speakers. The speaker search, like tubes and pickups, can be quite the rabbit hole. I’d YouTube all of the speakers we’ve mentioned and see what you dig.

My Peavey 3120 (with EL34's) slays through Marshall MF400 (K100's).
The cab balances the middy tone of the amp with darker tone and more low end.
Although I'm not a 70/80's player, after the tube swap (I changed V1 and V2 for 12AY7 and 12AT7) the gain sweep is much more usable.
