Excellent vids Pete thanks for that.. quick question about mics. I notice you often use a sm57 but have seen it paired up with heil stuff and other stuff in the past. Do you have a current favourite 2nd mic? I like the idea of a ribbon mic but those Royers sure are expensive..

Also, what difference if any do you notice between the scumback and Weber legacy? I have a bunch of legacies and like them a lot.

Legacies are great! I really like them. Also just starting to use the Austin Speakerworks speakers- loving them so far. The Crossroads is awesome for a plexi type amp!

I use the SE VR1 ribbon mic. A bit easier on the wallet than a Royer. I also really like the Heil PR20.

Great stuff Pete! Also, just downloaded your album (thanks to RT) and it rocks. Very, very cool. BIG fan of "Payed by the Note"!

thanks for posting this. i'm in the process of setting up a small home studio.. so it's quite helpful. still waiting for spring to arrive so i can empty the room and re-configure things.. but this is inspirational as well as timely. thanks again.

Pete Thorn, the guitar player of cover bands. ;)

I've only had the opportunity to watch the first video so far but that was a fantastic walk-through Pete.

Fantastic Pete  One of my main focal points at NAMM this year (besides the Suhr Factory Show and Friedman Show you graced your talent), was on recording products for a home studio. The video's were also informative to myself on layout ideas. I hope you continue more parts to these video's (hardware, software, etc.). Thanks so much for sharing

Pete's vids are killing me!!! So far I've bought the Bogner Red, CM Plexitone, Scumback M75's, started using Transcribe! and can say everything I've purchased has been acurately represented in Pete's vids...

I am curious though about the switch from the older scumback M75 to the Weber Legacy. When I bought the M75's it was after the split from Weber so the models I have are the black frame speakers. I just placed an order for two 12" Weber Legacy, 30oz, small dust cap, 75hz, 65 watt speakers. Cant wait to directly compare them to the M75's!!!

Thanks for sharing Pete, killer new studio you have there
Just curious, how is summing the 2 tracks different in overall tone to just mixing them to taste at the faders?
I've heard its better, but I dont know why or how.... I really dont know a dam thing about summing  Its like this wierd grey voodoo area in recording for me
Thanks in advance
Jim

Hey Pete. Question about micing techniques. Do you the techniques you described in the video work well with micing a cab for live use or is there a different technique for micing a cab in a band setting? I think I know what the answer is, but I don't want to assume.

I had been taught to mic the speaker near the edge of the cone at an angle facing in toward the center of the speaker. I am eager to try the method you use this weekend. I never paid that much attention to how far the mic was from the grill, but I will now :)

this vid just gave me an idea for a small iso booth i can build. thanks for the inspiration.

This is a such a great post. Thanks for taking the time Pete.

Dave

Love the idea of cutting out the time-based pedals on the board, for going in front of a gainy amp!
