OMG does he suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His playing is so damn awful. I cannot believe it is that same guy that did the lead on Photograph. Must be some serious studio magic going on. The guy is such an f'n hack. Yeah I'm nothing great and he's hugely successful and will never care what I think but I can't help myself. The guy can't play worth a shit! He reminds me of Guitar Center. Anyone else watching the show?

their singer's voice is shot, too.

they did write some good songs though.

He's got a bit of that Vernon Reid thing in him doesn't he. You know, like what the guitar would sound like if you played it with a blender.

It seems that after Steve Clark died he got the idea in his head to be a shredder. Apparently his hands never got the message.

His Manraze stuff does nothing for me. New Def Lep doesn't either. After Pyromania, its all suspect to me.

Wow, just wow, all that fast picking on that clip, I figured he would be pretty good.

I realy like them as a band but he is definately not a guitar virtuoso and should not be allowed to play like that in public. The delay just creates a washy mess. Nothing wrong with playing slow.

It´s always like that when he´s out of the band context and sitting down in front of a camera... just some really stressed-out playing. It thankfully doesn´t spill over much to the shows or the albums, though.

the twitching hand was present back then too =0 although less obvious , end of the solo here

saw em in 2007 with whitesnake, absolutely killer show, not surprised his voice is shot if he's been singing like that since the early/mid 80s

Man, that was disappointing. I thought it was just the environment of TMS because many who play on there just don't sound good. But watching that NAMM vid just makes me think he is definitely no virtuoso. He has a killer sig Jackson though.

I saw that too and thought the same thing. Since I've been doing this Def Leppard tribute I've had the chance to listen to him more. He writes some really good, catchy, melodic stuff. But let him play on his own and it's always that fast picking stuff.

i dont think collin played on pyromania m8

To me it's clear that he can play, and much better than a lot of people, but what he chooses to play, out of the song context isn't very listenable or melodic. I don't think he's lacking any ability other than restraint and an ear for improvising in a melodic way. To say he sucks is pretty silly IMO.

I wonder what his version of the Star Spangled Banner would sound like?

I did not think it sound very good either. Why did they pick him over Vivian...would have been better playing for sure then.

Im glad that somebody brought it up, I was blown away at how bad it was; Right on with the GC reference. It kills me because this is a guy who plays guitar for a living, as in lead guitar in an 80's rock band. Now I know that music isnt about the ability to shred or some kind of technical facility isnt everything, Songwriting and compositional skills figure in as well but damn, That was really really bad...

Theyve had a couple of guys on that show that were horrible. George sucked on it, Gilbey Clarke was HORRID... I just dont get it. As silly as it might sound, I barely play these days and Im confident that I could have done a much much better job and that goes for most of this forum..

You know what. Why exactly was Phil Collen on The Metal Show? They were never a metal band, and they stopped being a rock band when Hysteria came out in the late 80's. Since then they've had more in common with Air Supply or Michael Bolton.

I did like the tone he had when he hit the Chords in the Namm video.
Anyone know what he was plugged into?
