I did like the tone he had when he hit the Chords in the Namm video.
Anyone know what he was plugged into?

Looked like something running on an iPad..

you'd think that with all the deaths, amputations, and rehabs in Def Lep that they've had enough "time in between recordings" for him to practice.

yeah, I went there...only because he was a total prick to me in '87

He's got a bit of that Vernon Reid thing in him doesn't he. You know, like what the guitar would sound like if you played it with a blender.

LOL so true!! I have seen Reid play a few times.. I don't get it. No genius goin on there, just a kazillion notes run together with some bends and terrible fast vibrato. I think the leads were never that great but they fit the song. That was the old days.... after Hysteria, I don't see too much coming out of that band. Vivian is much better..

BTW, the pour some sugar lick is cool and they did write some cool riffs here or there so I have to recognize them for that even if the leads were mostly underwhelming.

I barely play these days and Im confident that I could have done a much much better job and that goes for most of this forum..

Thats what I was thinking lastnight... most of the guys here could have done a much better job then Phil did. We are actually blessed with a lot of damn fine players on this very forum!!

Hysteria and Pyromania helped shape my childhood, so it's hard for me to criticize, but yeah that was bad.
Funny, I remember some interviews and VH1's DLepp biopic depicting Steve Clark as being jealous of Phil's technical abilities.

IDK.....he is better than me. I still like old DL. Anything past Pyromania you can keep though.

Yup.....loved me some Def Lep back in the day.
Stopped listening to them after Hysteria. I LOVE THAT CD!!
Still do....

Meh just goes to show you that writing hit songs > than lead guitar playing when in a pop metal band IMO. I don't think he "sucks" per se, but I'm not going to defend some of the stuff I just heard in vids in this thread either ;) That said, his new sig looks pretty cool, PC Supreme? And it's offered in other hardware options besides 80s bling GOLD   Still wish they'd do a regular PC1 with black or chrome hardware too. I actually think the sustainer thing is pretty cool and would love to mess with one myself.

When I was big into collecting guitars.....I had one of his Prototype Jacksons that was made for him.
27 frets....kahler...
Sold it long ago when liquidating my collection. But here is a pic of it.
Once again........should of kept it!!

I think some guys are great at off the cuff and some are better when they have time to create. You all mentioned how awful pretty much everyone has been on That Metal Show, so why should he be any different? I think he's a good player. I'm more weirded out by his "hyper vegetarian, shirtless, buff, but too old to do it anyway" routine to hear much of the playing

+1 to after Pyromania they were shit and have always been since.

Also That Metal Show is so sad to watch. I watch because sometimes I need the time to kill and to have a show that celebrates metal/hard rock is really needed but god damn do those guys suck. Boring, embarrassingly unfunny and can't do anything but cram their tongues up the ass of every guest. Horrible interviews etc etc etc. I get that Trunk is respected or liked in that community for his love for it but for god's sake get him off camera and take his F grade standup buddy's with him. Phil Anselmo should host and Jennifer should co-host

.....I miss the brunette a little though

The guy plays an unaccompanied solo everytime they play live, one would think that he would have the time to create something to play for that spot... Sounds like what he did on THS is exactly what he does live...

Like I said, I dont get it. The guy can write a song but cant seem to put some kind of comprehensible little diddy together?

He may not be that creative musically with it but he can pick those arpeggios a lot quicker and cleaner than I ever could. Granted I never practiced that kind of stuff due to my AC/DC DNA but I would say he is technically (not necessarily musically) better than most on this forum. I would like to see vids from folks bashing him where they own with their 6 string wizardry

George Lynch sucked donkey balls both times on TMS and he's worshipped around here. I don't get it.

I should have been more clear when I said "create". I meant in terms of having a song around you, not necessarily creating a solo spot. It's like when you have a hard time coming up with something from scratch but if someone else plays you something then it just feeds of that and really flows.

Ok I like my first 15 seconds than anything old Phil had to offer

try listening to the cybernaunts cd . their is some great playing on that cd. or look at you tube they have the tracks there.

Lol. Hey I started the thread and you called me out. For better or worse I should atleast have the decency to post a vid of my own playing.

Mutt Lange wrote that lick, if you listen properly Phil can't play it like the recording
