The question is for thrash what would you pair a DiMarzio Super Distortion with? I prefer sweeter liquid lead tones on the neck. I want the output to be similar. Coil splitting is not important.

Air Norton, it does exactly this and pairs well output wise with a Super D. I’ve been using that combination in a number of guitars.

I like the air Norton a lot but I have three prestige ibbys with one.

I don't want to be too redundant. Do you have any other suggestions?

DiMarzio Evolution Neck or an old but at one time, staple RG neck pickup, the PAF Pro (I still love those with basswood RG's, awesome for lead tones).

I like Evo's a lot but how does it get along with the super distortion? I wouldn't of thought about that combination tbh.

Cheers!

Good question/point! Now that I think on it, the RG I have with the EVO Neck has a DiMarzio "Transition" in the bridge which doesn't really sound like a SD. But think of it this way, the Super Distortion is such a killer bridge pup, it sounds great with almost anything, you'd almost have to try to find something that doesn't work well with it. Is the RG basswood or mahogany?

I have a liquifire in another prestige and love it, how do you think that would pair up with the super distortion? My other thought is the PAF 36th as it comes in a set cheaper than buying two separate pickups.

+1, the evolution really surprised me in a good way.

I'd g Liquifire. The PAF Pro is anything but smooth/liquidy, IMO. It's got a really emphatic, chirpy attack. It's one of the brightest humbuckers I can think of.

Basswood body, Super D bridge is killer! I love that combo. I have it paired with a PAF Pro, an Air Norton and Virtual Blues 2. All are great. The AN is the hottest and smoothest, the PAF is the most versatile, and the blues is single coil, so not applicable here. I should add that the Steves Special is a great neck pickup as well, similar to the AN.

One thing that I would like to try, is the Humbucker from Hell. The ole Paul Gilbert Racer X days, which would be great for thrash, IMO.

I’d go PAF pro, Liquifire, or Breed.

Personally, I found the Breeds to be lifeless. I swapped them out of my universe for the Evolutions, which made a HUGE improvement to the sound.

Breed neck is what you want. It will keep up with the output of the Super Distortion and give you awesome lead tones. It's got a lot of midrange but good definition for chord work. It's more versatile than just a great pickup for liquid leads, but if sweet liquid lead tone is what you're after, it will deliver.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I don't doubt that you got that perception. However, not only is my experience with the Breed is quite the opposite, its specs and all the decent audio clips of it suggest that it very much has its own unique character. "Lifeless" would not be a word I would associate with a Breed. I have installed several Breeds over the years. I even used a Breed neck in the bridge position of a dark sounding guitar and it brought that guitar to life.

You could always try swapping magnets too. Just simple things like going from polished A5 to roughcast or using A4 can make a world of difference. The Breed is one Dimarzio that is pretty responsive to various magnets.

I have the same question with my rg550. The stock PU's are very underwhelming to me.

I have been listening to clips and am leaning towards the Breed. It will be a while until I get around to ordering them, but I think the Super Distortion and breed is what will end up in there.

Feel free to keep making suggestions!

Cheers!

Are you open to other pickup brands? The Jim Wagner Iron Man Set sounds great in my bright-sounding basswood Ibanez guitars. The neck Iron Man is very warm and fluid under high gain.

Yes I am for other guitars in general, but this one is for sure getting a Super Distortion in the bridge.

I will definitely look into them. I have another prestige that will be getting new pickups down the road, and maybe that one will get something else, or maybe the set you mentioned.

Cheers!
