Went to a guitar store and played a used Gibson SG that they had. I have a Les Paul and it is a great guitar as well but man, there is something about an SG that just rocks. Tones are great and not sure if it is a combination of weight, body depth, etc. but just feels right in my hands.

I wanted to try out an SG "High Performance" version with the coil tap, auto tuners, etc. but didn't have one in stock. Anyway, I had forgot how much I loved those guitars. I used to gig with an SG years ago. Had one with an "Iommi" pickup and one later with a Duncan Distortion. Great gigging guitar as it is light and still has nice low end.

Only downside with these guitars is you have to treat them like you are carrying an infant. Don't want to snap that headstock. LOL!

I have to try some of the newer ones
I just spent the day on my carved top SG & it sounds/feels so good! It could improve in tuning stability though, maybe I’ll pay a tech to look at it

Yeah that is the only thing about Gibson guitars that can be frustrating, the tuning stability. Not horrible by any means but I think compared to other companies, it can be an issue.

Dude, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been a super strat guy all my life. Within the last year and half I picked up an SG, my life instantly changed. I fucking dialed in and ran with it. Changed my outlook and my take on guitars. For fuck’s sake if they’re good enough for Tony Iommi and Angus Young then they must good enough for me. Not to mention the plethora of other players that rock the fuck out of them.

I know I’m a metal guy but I am in love with the SG.

Well, anyway.

Congrats, SGs are cool!

I had an SG Platinum a few years ago, felt much more ergonomic than a Les Paul and had a very cool tone. The only problem I had was a dead spot in the neck that I couldn't seem to work around so it was eventually sold.

Is that a common issue with SGs or was I just unlucky?

Everybody needs an SG ;) I have an old beater, a Gibson goth I scored for $300 bucks a few years ago. After a good setup it's one of favorites to leave out all the time... been debating on getting new pups for it though...

I had an 70's SG Standard a long time ago....that was a killer guitar, too bad my younger self was a dumbass in terms of getting rid of guitars I shouldn't have :aww:

I am not really a Gibson fan, but SGs are probably my favorite of the all the guitars they make. I would probably have one if they didn't have the mega neck dive. That drives me crazy.

I love my ‘72 SG Custom, it always blows people’s minds when they see it being used in a death metal band.

I originally searched it out because late 60’s/early 70’s Gibsons have a narrower nut width that I like. I was missing one of the original Tarback pickups so I threw a Bareknuckle Aftermath in the bridge position with new pots and wiring. Thickest sounding guitar I own.

Love them too but my biggest gripe is the neck diving, so I never owned one. Instead I went with a Viper that has the strap button on the top horn to eliminate the dive.

Shask!! :) You always pop in somewhere on the forum after I haven't chatted in awhile.

I had the SG back when you and I had those Peavey XXX combos. They should have put a counterweight on the body somewhere. :)

And I told myself I wasn't going to buy any more guitars this year.

Gosh dang you guys!

I lurk every once in awhile. :)

I have an old 80's BC Rich Mockingbird in pieces in the basement that I have had for years, but never had together. Anyways, it has a similar feel to an SG. I did put metal rods in it to try to counterbalance the neck dive.

If they would use a thinner neck, and make the body slightly thicker they wouldn't have that issue. I had a LTD Viper that was like that, and it was much more comfortable in that regard.

I passed on an ESP Viper in Urban Camo a while back due to budget reasons. Love the way that guitar looked. I'll find one again one day, deal God's willing...

-How can you not love the ELECTRIC MAYHEM that oozes out of -The SG-?
-$he's definitely a jealous bitch, play different guitar & it feels like a ukulele.
-(NECK DIVE)- I've never seen an SG that neck dives like a kamikaze, or one that can't be fixed, C'MON,.. Its an old excuse with a billion remedies. Here's some of the SG's I've owned with ZERO neck dive, SUPREME, DIABLO & 70's NORLIN's
-(Tuning Issue's)- another old NON-ISSUE, usually the nut.

Longtime LP player now converted to SG's. Wish I would have tried them before.

What do you guys think of the ESP Viper compared to an SG? I've been on a Corrosion of Conformity again kick for a while, saw them and met Pepper last week, and I'm seriously thinking about an SG or Viper.

The Viper feels totally different than an SG.
Pepper and Woody actually have ESP SG copies. They aren't Vipers.
