Now that I'm older I can see why the hair metal stuff had to end. You just can't sustain that forever. It looses it's luster after awhile. Again, I loved the whole Poison, Cinderella, Warrant, Winger, thing but by the late 80's enough is enough already. The writing was on the wall....we just didn't know yet.
I love 90's alt and grunge 'almost' as much with big props to RHCP, STP, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Candlebox, Bush, Creed, etc. After that, I was off into 311, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Kid Rock etc so the album collection kept growing.
With all of this it was the GUITAR that drew me in. Not the looks or the singer or how many #1 hits they had.
Lastly, on Crue specifically:
I give Nikki Sixx major props for largely popularizing the whole genre. I mean, he wrote most of their songs and was the creative drive behind their image. They evolved and were always slightly ahead of their peers. They went from a garage punk KISS thing, to full on SMBD leather thing, to the glam look, then to jean jackets and cowboy boots, then to a more modern look. Point being, they didn't have the same shtick all the time as everyone else seemed to be doing. Not to mention Mick Mars' guitar tone.
Long live hair metal
