How many guys are using this cab? Have you played around with different speakers? Which one's do you like? How about Greenbacks? I'm really wondering how one would sound with 2 Scumback M75's......mmm!

And how does it compare to other OS cabs like the Avatars and Bogners of the world? Thanks.

I have the 4x12 which i love! When i talked to jim from scumback he recommemned the m75's over the h75's as the port does add alot of bass and adding a bass heavey speaker will turn your sound to mudd quick, Anyways i love there cabs and they have a 3D sound to them.

I'm interested in trying the Port City too.

I've got a Mojo 2x12 with two Scumback M75's that I'm using with my Friedman Marshall. The M75's sound awesome with the Friedman, but the cab can get pretty flubby and would resonate badly when playing around an open A. I covered the insides with polyfill like the Bogner cabs and that helped some, but it's still not a very tight cab.

I've played a Mark IV through a Thiele for years and want the same tight bass in a 2x12. Does anyone know if the port city 2x12 can compare? Maybe not the OS version?

Jason

You are one step away from wanting a bedroom low powered boutique marshall voiced amp

Charvel players use 4x12s

You still have that Bog OS?

ab,

The OS would not be the way to go if you want a tighter bass reponse its a pretty open sounding to be honest, The standard is pretty tight sounding but you will notice yourself knocking off bass response as it adds a good amount with the port.

I agree 100%. I have an Os 2x12 with V30s. Sounds really good, but my Suhr CAA ported 2x12 with Govenors was tighter. I am also intersted in the M75s in a Port City. If you get some sebby please post a review. The OS does really well with modulation fx like chorus.

I picked up a Lonestar 1x12 for 800 bucks. I wanted clean and mid gain tones covered since the Fortin does the gain. Thinking about throwing the Lonestar in a head and could use a 2x12 for it. The Lonestar cleans are just awesome.

well i have been on a cab quest as of late,..(i got the chance to play through a marshall 8x10 cab,..and was blown away,...and i was curious as to why this cab sounded so awesome!,..was it the speakers?..or was it the cab design??)..and i have been doing alot of research on cab construction and how it effects your sound,...at first i was amazed at how little thought most cab designers put into there designs!!,..like zero thought!,..most just make the cab big enough to hold the speakers (i read an interview with jim marshall and those were his words!)...and then most others just copied the marshall cabs!!...bass cabs are probably the best thought out/designed,..heres some things to try if you have a "flubby" cab.

-buy some baltic birch,.(thou there is some debate on using softer/harder words for tunning your cab),..and make some dividers with holes in them..(check out the MILLS CABS, web site...it's what they do that no one else does,..and this is the only difference in there cabs than any other quality cab that i have seen so far anyways,..could this be there magic ingrediant?)...the mills cabs use this perferated divider down the center of the cabs dividing the left and right sides,..this does 2 major things,..makes the cab volume less and controls some off the sound comming off the back of the speakers,..(dont forget the back of the speakers moves just as much air as the front)....i have been thinking of making a "mills" type divider that not only goes vert. but also horiz. !!...

-use some of that bogner foam or whatever else ya wanna try thats easy/cheap easy to remove and line the entire inside of your cab!,..some sound engineers say that the only thing it does is reduce the size/volume of the inside of your cab..

-DISCLAIMER- i have been doing my cab research for about 2 weeks,...so i am lucky if i am in that "knows just enough to be dangerous" category,...

but i am making the "mills" divider as we speak!..i'm gonna do some experimentation,..and hopefully do some clips of the before and after,..

i know the MILLS cab dude pokes in here every now and then,..i would love to pick his brain,..since it seems that MILLS,DR Z, & GENZ are about the only guitar cab makers out there actually putting thought/design into there cabs.

I have been playing a 2x12 OS for about two years now. It is wide open sounding. huge and uncompressed. the bass can be overwhelming if not dialed back or eq'd out. destroys any closed back 4x12 Ive heard. I have not heard the mills though.

I have tone tubby ceramics in mine now with my Einstein, but I had wizards, v30s, swamp things in it also. it worked well with anything I put in it.

Lately I Have been wanting to order an avatar vintage 2x12 for 269 bux to add to the port city.

I also have thought about adding the mills cutout to an existing cabinet also let us know how it goes.

heres a couple other little things that most probably already knew.

-on a closed back cab- loosening or removing every other screw on the back board has a significant effect on the sound,..it makes it bigger,...it's like tunning a drum!

-the cab covering makes tonal differnces,..(again just like a dum),..thicker covering makes more bass,..and no covering makes more high freq. (the reason uncoverd cabs are brighter)..

-cab placement relative to floor, walls if it's on wheels etc,...(i really like putting my cab in the corner)

-making a wooden insert for your back panel will brighten it .

I played on a Mills 4x12 and it didn't blow me away at all. I've heard plenty of Marshall with Greens or H30's that sound better to me. And i never heard anything special abut the Genz Benz

well that just proves the fact that the speakers play a much larger role in the sound,...but ya cant compare different cabs with different speakers...if you put 75's in the best cab,..designed buy an enitire bus load of the top sound engineers in the world,..designed specificaly for me,...i would still take the cheapo avatar cab with greenbacks in it.

i apologize for hi-jacking your thread man.

Oh, no big deal. Just sharing my experiences. The Mills cab was loaded with 100 watt celestions and V30's. There was an old Marshall cab in the room with Blackback 30's which sounded a lot better to me. Some may feel differently though.

Hm, there is something about those ported 2x12 cabs.

I have Bogner 4x12, a H&K 4x12 play a Marshall 4x12 at times, and they all get pwned by my 2x12 Ported Heritage cab. It's just tuned right and sounds great with any speaker, articulate, fat and rich. More usable bass than my 4x12s too.
