Not trying to be a dick
I respect TheGreatGreen and his opinion.
I do think they have their place though.
Maybe not so much for official demos-
But for an in-room approximation I'm down.

Let's see

An ABY comparison would be even cooler.

I thought this one I made captures the higher mid gain tones I get out of my Hermansson pretty well, drop D with Les Paul with Lundgren Black Heavens. This is for those of you worried his amps sound too tight or too clanky

The iPhone does a WAY better job of a full-spectrum in-room tone. Not AS good as in the room, but nothing is. Close mic is clearly better for a recorded mix, but that's a different sound than a "live" sound.

I did a comparo last week actually of close mic / triple tracked and then the same thing separately with the iPhone in the room.

For another example, there's no way a close mic can capture the hugeness of a Wizard power section. A phone in the room does a much better job.

Where in this case anyway, trying to (single track) close mic it actually came out sounding like shit (when it was balls out in the room). I should probably delete this vid other than there are just so few Wiz comparo clips out there.

Another example- this is in the garage & clipping due to volume, but another showing of the "bigness" of a tone that a close mic simply can't pick up. You would otherwise never know how massive the sound was.

Same amp single track close mic'd.

Phone clips can be awesome if you have ear buds or headphone on . Makes a huge difference in hearing the real sound . IMO .

I always use my cell phone to make clips. The phone is maybe 5 feet away sitting on top of another amp. My BE100 with a vintage MXR 10 band EQ in front of the amp. BE channel. Low bedroom volume. You can hear my pick on the strings if you listen closely. Sounds decent.

I've had a theory for a while now that part of the issue is thus- guys hear a clip of an amp, and they are comparing what they hear to how they think the amp should sound on recorded music they're familiar with. The problem is, how an amp sounds as one player in a room is totally different than the tone produced & mastered on a track. Relevant example- when you play a IIC+ in the room, it sounds like that first clip up above which is OK but not mind blowing. It does not sound like MOP.

On the other hand there are some amps that are amazing in the room, but IMO just don't record well- like the SLO. So, how you listen is really about the right tool for the job. For example- do you want to buy an amp to play at home? Then a (good) phone clip is going to give you a better taste of reality than a close mic clip. However, if you want to buy an amp to record songs with then the opposite is true.

Thanks for showing some comparison stuff

So true

Ok, technically these weren't recorded with a cell phone or a "real" amp. They're 10 years or more old, Axe-FX clips, recorded with a digital camera (extracted audio). So, old technology recorded with old technology. Made by some joker who shreds way too much, who obviously listened to too much Yngwie/Vinnie Moore/Paul Gilbert in his youth. :D

Axe-FX Standard (pre 2 or 3) into a Carvin power amp & two 4x12 cabs (so no IRs used), recorded very loud (camera was in the next room). Was just having some fun with feedback & delay.

Axe-FX Standard into two active studio monitors,, recorded at conversation volume (you can hear the acoustic sound of the pick hitting the strings).

This is a reason I rarely post clips. Dude plops his cellphone in front of his Mesa combo and it sounds huge. I was standing in the room and it sounded exponentially bigger. Fucking massive. But it sounds so meh here. No huge low end, no perfectly crispy highs, just meh. This was two amps, just trying it out.
