Power scaling vs master volume vs attenuation?? Marshall NMV

Which ones do you prefer?

I read that some people loves the london power scaling or the skipz power scaling.

Which one do you like?

Ultimate attenuator...it a reamper. Takes your amps output back to line level and then reamps it with a solid state amp. Great for simple non-master volume heads, because you can order them with 2 master volumes which are footswitchable, and you can have david ho (the guy who makes them) put an effects loop in the unit, so essentially you can take any non master volume head and turn it into a master volume head with 2 assignable masters (ie. lead/rhythm volume) and an effects loop. sweet huh?

I have A/B tested on my Metro Super Lead clone: LAR/MAR PPIMV, Faustine Attenuator, and the Aracom Attenuator.

The PPIMV sounded and performed the best to me. But it really depends on what you intend to do with it. A PPIMV will not sound that good at mouse-fart volumes. It excels at knocking the band-level volume of an amp down a few notches so your ears don't bleed. It's not really that good at playing at TV volumes. BUT, it is cheaper than a thousand-dollar attenuator. And to me, it actually sounded much better.

I have no experience with power scaling.

I've had a MV in a 1959 '82 and remember it sounded good! I have it laying around,maybe I should just put it in.

Are yours the one from Metro?

I have tried this, and power scaling. This kit rocks, and is only $30. Instead of pre, or post PI it becomes like an active gain in the PI. You can take your amp to a whisper quiet level, and still have it sound pretty good. This will only get you pre-amp distortion sound. If you want to get the cranked amps sound at lower levels you will need to install power scaling.

I tried the London Power Scaling in my Super Lead reissue. For no apparent reason smoke came billowing out of my amp, there was a pop and the amp went silent. (see picture below)

I had a PPIMV installed in it's place and never looked back.

I've owned a Ultimate Attenuator for years and used it with various amps. It sounds just "OK"....not perfect, but it does the job.

Now my 100W Diezel Einstein...I can make that quiter than my string strumming and still sounds good.
