I wouldn't mind giving one a go. I'd probably aim for an old 5150 but idk which is better. I had a 6505+, it was my first tube amp and I had no knowledge about gear whatsoever at the time. I've heard them sound really good when others are using them but mine was fizz city.

I wish I had tested different tubes and what not before I sold it. My other guitarist has one but I haven't got to play or hear it yet since something is wrong with it but he should be getting it fixed soon.[/quote]

Were you running any kind of eq in the loop of the 6505+ when you had it? Every high gainer I've owned and still own sounds too fizzy to my ears in the high end. I suck the 8 and 16 kHZ frequencies out with an mxr 10 band.

I did eventually have a rack going with it. But again I had no idea what I was doing at the time. I couldn't dial the fizz out but I didn't know how to utilize an eq with guitar.

I agree with what you say, even my Rev 2 has an odd fizz somewhere in the spectrum but it's not too bad and was nothing like the 6505+ I had. I would like to try a para EQ to see what I can do with it.

I bet you could get the Rev 2 dialed in even better, I'd definitely give it a shot! Never tried a parametric just the mxr which is graphic.

I just went back and forth on my Savage and it's literally night and day between eq on and eq off. I couldn't play any of my amps with out one in the loop; its that much of a game changer for me.

Do you find yourself using the same basic mxr EQ settings for your amps, or does each amp require its own peculiar frequency tweaks?

I use the same basic settings. If anything maybe just a slight tweak of the 62.5 and 125 kHZ sliders to accommodate for low mids and bass.

These amps have a lot of gain, but you don't have to use it all. ;)

Has nothing to do with gain really.

Those annoying "fizzy" frequencies I'm talking about are not affected one way or the other by the gain knob; at least not on the numerous amps I've owned or played on.

Regardless of where the "fizz" originates, I've been able to get rid of it in every high gainer I've played/owned with an MXR in the loop. For me the eq in the loop not only removes the fizz, but it also removes the "blanket over the speakers" effect and adds girth, depth and an overall 3D quality to the sound.

I have a ten-band mxr unit and am interested in trying this out myself. Could you perhaps give a list of settings you like as a starting point for me to work with?

My 6505+ is fizzy too. EQ in the loop to the rescue.
I also did the bias mod to warm it up, and that helped a bunch.

Like I said, I completely suck the 8 and 16 KHz, and then I bump the 31.25 Hz and 62.5 Hz for more thump. The other sliders I suck and bump until my ears are happy.

I'd just set the sliders flat and start moving them around. Your ears and taste will surely be different than mine considering I'm probably half deaf

I own two 6505+ mine are only fizzy at low volumes, gotta turn them up and dont set the gain to high.

I never have fizz, but I only use mine cranked up with the band.
No low volume usage.

Thanks! I'll give it a whirl and see what works best.
