And by sheer chance, you are correct, the earth isn't a perfect sphere, it's an oblate spheroid bulging .03% at its equator due to rotation. That was calculated by satellites going AROUND (get it?) the earth.

According to Neil Tyson it's an oblate spheroid that is pear shaped.

I feel like putting a globe in every classroom starting in 1st grade has been mainly a propaganda move, since most people will never have any idea where Uzbekistan is or what it's capital is called, never mind being able to name all 50 US states.
