I'm thinking of upgrading from my VH2 to a VH4 and I was wondering what midi controller you guys would recommend for the VH4 or if there is a foot switch I could get to work it.
Also I see there are 4 effects loops(one for each channel ) is there also a series loop that works in all 4 channels ?
Thanks

I would look at getting a multi effects floor controller like an HXFX or Fx8 to maximize the potential. Thats what I ran with my vh4.

I have an FX8 can it run the channel switching without completely taking up all the blocks ?

Oh yeah. The midi switching would be setup in the config tab and under midi PC. You can create a midi patch per scene etc.

If I'm remembering right, there are a few caveats with the VH4's MIDI functionality.

Only the channel inserts and the parallel loops are MIDI controllable. I think the serial loop is always on.

I also don't think the VH4 accepts CC commands, so you have to have a separate MIDI program for every permutation that you'd want. E.G., Program 1 for channel 1, no insert, no parallel loop. Program 2 for channel 1, insert loop but no parallel loop. Program 3 for channel 1, no insert but parallel loop. Program 4 for channel 1 with insert and parallel loops. Program 5 for channel 2, no insert, no parallel loop. Etc. etc.

I don't know what that figures into modern multiFX controllers.

Correct... you would have to program, changes you want in vh4 via the store functions to correlate with PC's with fx8. It is quite simple once you get your head wrapped around it.

thanks guys , just bought a VH4 ,won't be here till next week though. So will a 5 pin midi cable work or do I need the 7 pin ?

5 pin

Curious on your thoughts on VH2 vs VH4. Please post when you get some time!

There is a third party MIDI chip available to change the limited functionality of the Diezel MIDI system. It’s $50...and allows for CC changes, making instant access buttons doable. I have one in my Herbert.

Welcome to the VH4 club!

Make sure you don't use a 7 pin cable if your midi controller doesn't accept phantom power, or requires a different voltage. It'll get fried and the amp might get damaged too.

Hey AJ, are you saying that there's a risk it'd be fried, man?

Get it? FriedMan?

I'll show myself out. :dunno:

Got my amp and spent 2 hours trying to figure out how to change channels via midi from the FX8 .

Looking at the diezel manual it looks like it should be simple . I think my problem is I dont know how to set the FX8 up . I have no clue what midi channel to use or what command to tell it to send . I also don’t know if I should use the PC or the CC commands .

Any help would be appreciated

Are you using Fx Edit? I would make sure the VH4 is setup in OMNI mode (refer to Diezel manual) With efx edit got to the config tab. Choose midi tab. I would set up the scenes. Scene 1 choose midi channel one and pc 2. Now go to the the VH4 configure the channel you would like, then push store. I believe the lights should be blinking ( could be mistaken) then go back to fx edit and scroll PC2 down to PC1. It should store that PC to scene one. Then move onto scene 2 and repeat. Then go to foot-switch and assign the scene to which ever button you would like to use. This should get you started. You can then begin to bring in whatever effects etc you would like fior each scene. Or you could use scenes 1-4 for just switching the amp and switches 5-8 for stomp-box mode.

Voodoo Lab Ground Control Pro: Rock solid and the best bang for your effort. Mine's going on 10 years and works flawlessly, easy to setup and interfaces perfectly with any Diezel guitar amp.

Note: You will need a browser other than IE11, like Edge or Chrome to view the online videos.
