Yup. Of course, I was trying to emulate the tone with a Boss or MXR pedal
Needless to say, it didn't work well. I tried my first real Marshall in 1986 belonging to a friend of mine. What I shock that was!
It was a non-master volume with a Power soak.

I bought (and still have) the T.C. Electronics Line Driver/Dist+ pedal in about 81/82 and used that with the JMP through the 80's. It sounded quite nice!

That video clip of the RR sounds badass!!! Are you sure it's going to be $1k?

Some guy on HCAF is saying around $6400 for the stack :scared: Norton666

gadzooks, that's a lot of dough. I got some buds at GC, wonder what the discount price will be.

Yup, even back then. I was listening to UFO, Van Halen and Scorpions (Think "The Zoo") at that time. I liked that tone better.
As far as Ozzy, I liked the tunes a lot but the guitar tone left me kinda cold compare the other bands mentioned above.

Wow, you're the first I know who actually took offense to the tone back in the day. Picky bastage. ;)

Lots of people didn't like that tone back then. I hated it. I also hated Tom Scholz' tone on the Boston records back then. Both guys were playing Marshalls but I hated their tone.

I posted examples of what I thought was good tone using Marshalls back then, but my examples were a bit less gainy than Randy's tone. I can't think of any high gain tones from that era beyond Scorpions/Judas Priest/AC-DC/etc. which were still less preamp buzzy than Rhoads' tone.

But then my tone might have sucked then too, I don't know. I used a JMP, and later a JCM800, with an original Rat pedal for boost and I thought it kicked ass but if I heard it now I might not like it.

keep me in mind for sure brother George!!!

Guy at Marshall was saying today that the Rhoads head was being built in quote "extremely limited numbers".

i don't think it's really fair to compare randy's tone back in the day to the scorpions, priest, evh or anyone...he was obviously going for a different sound than any of them were at the time

i really think something like the early mesa mark II's would've fit randy's playing style perfectly...imagine if his two albums had better production and were tracked with a IIC+

while i think his playing was phenomenal, and he'll always be one of my all time favs...i'm not a big fan of his tone back in the day, but for what was available at the time i think it worked decently for the sound he was going for; it certainly didn't make his playing stand out any less

George - why aren't you at namm? I thought for sure you'd be there.

OK I got alittle info on the RR.....they are only making 100 units and list is $4k. Still waiting to see if my rep is getting any allocated for my territory.

My review of the RR Marshall on HCAF:

So I heard the RR Marshall demo at NAMM. They finally reissued the JMP. Sort of.

The high input of the normal channel is modded for more gain. But its like a ratty ass sounding gain that I did NOT find very pleasing. The high input of the bright channel sounds like a stock JMP though.

The Randy Rhoads cabs they had there were dummies, and when I asked what kind of speakers they were loading into them they said they didnt know yet.

I said, "it better be greenbacks." The guy laughed and agreed. They played the amp through a 1960A with 75's. That may have contributed to the asty top end on the modded channel...

They say the modden channel is based off the same mod Randy had done at the Marshall factory. Apparantly RR was the only person to ever have a Marshall modded at the factory. To me, the modded channel sounded like a JMP with a distortion box set up for a boost pushing it. It had sort of weird grainy top end. But like I said, the high input on the bright channel sounds like a stock JMP.

The thing is, for someone like me who bridges their channels, having the high input on the normal channel is kind of the shaft. I dont want or need the modded channel. Those of you who dont like using a boost will probably dig it though.
