If this site is accurate at all, Ozzy + Black Sabbath sales are slightly more than VH.

Beatles by a long shot.

Interesting list. Pink Floyd at 3 (193.7M). Bruce Springsteen at 19 (130.9M ). Kenny G at 50 (77.9M). Duran Duran at 101 (43.4M).

Not what I was expecting. I had no idea Springsteen was that popular. I just thought he had a small, but sickly dedicated base. He's up there with Garth Brooks and AC/DC.

Black Sabbath has slightly more sales that 2Pac, and both more sales than Ozzy.

If he was so concerned about all of these other "better" players it seems he would have started imitating them like they imitated him...
Unfortunately for him, he wasn't nearly good enough to do that

Ouch. Even the EVH fanboys will have to admit this is true...

So would the Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, etc, etc fan boys. All those unskilled guitarists.

My money is on EVH selling more albums than ALL 80s SHREDDERS COMBINED, with the noted exception of, just for this forum, Kirk Hammet.

Technique is not what makes a guitarist a great guitarist. If that's the case, Randy Rhoads is being blown away by a penny a dozen shredders you can find on youtube today.

What makes a guitarist great then? Selling albums? There must be some criteria I'm not aware of.

If you're trying to argue that EVH was a "great" guitarist that couldn't play half of his peers' licks than I'm not sure exactly what you mean by great.

Something other than shredding skills, for sure. You can tell this is an 80s forum. This place desperately needs a face palm smiley.

By this "logic", I have never Dimebag pick a Chet Atkins or Jerry Read tune, thus unable to play half his peers licks, thus a less than great guitarist. Perhaps even borderline sucks. Come on face palm smiley.

You said a mouthful....
By your "logic", Hendrix, Page, BB King, Clapton, Beck, this list is very long, are not great guitarists? Really?

  Not doing something and not having the ability to do it are two different things. Sounds pretty logical to me.

Yet you have concluded EVH was unable to cop RR licks because you never heard him do it, as opposed to just not doing it. Seems you have a bias regarding this matter.

Exactly. It's like saying someone who can type fast is a great author. That's complete BS.

no, just extending your logic. I never heard these guys copping RR licks either. They are certainly not shredders.

Since you asked me, I'll ask you....what then makes a great guitarist?

Oh, so I said Eddie couldn't cop RR's licks? Quote that for me if you don't mind, I'd like to see it. Maybe you're reading between the lines a little bit too much. Then again its still kind of early, maybe you should finish your coffee, take a dump and come back when you're more awake.

Cool, but I don't see anything mentioning RR there. Troll.

Then who exactly in a RR vs EVH thread, were you including in the "half" list there?

what you are forgetting is they were not around when Randy was. Uli was king in technique then but certainly not a penny a dozen back then. Yngwie broke it all out from there imho after that everyone and their brother were putting Varney'ish neo classical instrumental albums. Today can Rusty Cooley technically blow RR out of the water? Damn straight he could but I'd rather listen to Randy than Drooley. Its not how fast you play, its when and what you play. After Vinnie Moore and Tony MacAlpine the shred game got boring fast.

I agree and that's the point. Extra precise technique doesn't define a great guitarist. There are tons of guys that can play with extreme technique and aren't worth listening to.
