I am inspired by sunn o))), Boris, drone and doom. I am looking for ways to introduce harmonic complexity and modulation into a downtuned and very high gain guitar sound without it sounding squashed or compressed

I'm interested in the classic Keely mod RAT - I like the idea of additional clipping diodes for a more complex & richer distortion.

Does anyone have experience in modding a RAT for this sort of sound? Anything I should look out for or good ideas you came across

I got into doomy fuzzy stuff for a little while and built some pedals for it, the sunn life pedal is a good one for this (one of my favorite) but there is very little innovation or mods in its design.

It’s just a green ringer octave on a jfet blend > rat circuit (switchable clipping, otherwise stock) > switchable mosfet clean boost.

The green ringer gives a nasty fuzzy octave effect and being able to blend it in works real good to add another dimension to the rat’s distortion.

Honorable mention to the boss fz2, it can get super grindy. I just bought the behringer clone because fuck spending inflated hype prices on a used pedal that probably sold for $70 new.

I ended up putting a Keeley modded Rat on my board for the stoner skuzz. I do want to try the Griffin Analog Ice Rat, but the OG fits the puzzle on my board a little better.

I could combo up any two circuits for some serious Doom type shit .... my Sun God pedal ( Model T FET ) with any of the ones in this vid .... the Rat combo'ed up with it would be SICK !!

I wish more guys in here were into these type of tones .... cause I could create some wild shit

I was experimenting with a life pedal recently but I didn't like it. I am looking for a richer, complex beef in the lows & mids ... The octave made it feel more tinny through my setup than full.

The sound on sunn records when they strike a new note is what I'm aiming at - super thick and chewy grind ... Its like a palm muted chug but somehow elongated and massive. I was thinking Keely RAT because of the multiple clipping diodes adding different square wave textures to the entire sound rather than the octave ringing over the top of the whole sound

I feel like the Keeley mod is a little overrated. It's nice to have the options, but the different settings change the overall parameters so much that it makes it difficult to flip back and forth to find the right setting. You almost need to either memorize the settings for each position (or write them down) and adjust them all at once. Really, you might be better off figuring out which setting you prefer and getting the Rat version that correlates with that (Rat 2, Turbo Rat, etc...).

...Or get the Ice Rat from Griffin Analog...

The Ice Rat has three clipping options ..
Mosfet combined with Germanium
LED
Stock silicone
Also has an added presence control

Does it address the annoying volume jumps between settings that the Keeley suffers from?

Some cool stuff in this video ... The chug doesn't seem to "throw" that much, but it never does with RAT style distortion. The sustain is dope though & I like the way the grime oscillates a bit.

My current setup is a soldano SLO-30 (one day when I'm rich I'll be able to afford the 100) as my baseline dirt - preamp gain cranked all the way up. I am using a cheap 350W bass head as a power amp slave to drive more cabinets way harder than the SLO on its own. When the air itself is vibrating the guitar comes alive more and you can get way better dro)))ning grind. This alone gives me a super fat & defined chug for tighter rhythm parts & lead. Then I jack the front end with a standard RAT, recent vintage in order to get more clipping, sustain and harmonic saturation for drawn out drones and super thick, oozing chug. Thus combined with modulated reverb and a carbon copy delay gets me into some hella chunky, spaced out territory that vibrates the reptile brain ...

I want to take the show on the road more often but I am paranoid about hauling an expensive tube head like the soldano around, so I am looking for ways of achieving similar beef, from tight and defined death metal chugs with plenty of low end balls to ridiculous sunn style droning, modulated distortions

I'm not familiar with the Keeley ..... but if you mean volume drops between diode settings ... that's unavoidable ....
