Re-fret on the '81 les paul custom

Alright here goes all...
I've already gone through a horror show taking this into one of my local shops. I had them do a simple set-up to see if they could handle getting rid of a little buzz I was experiencing. I show up to pick my beloved up and they tell me they switched out the nut without even letting me know. The guitar was bone stock, same way it rolled out of Kalamazoo in 1981. It's a gibson les paul artisan, 2 pu model in tobacco burst. Anywho, they replaced the stock bone nut with a graphite nut, not because this was the apprentice's professional opinion, not because I was notified and asked which material I would like, because the shop charges less money for the graphite than the bone and clearly thought I would cheap out. Furious as I was over that they have done nothing more to the actual set-up of the guitar as to when I gave it to them because I am still experiencing buzz in the same spots I had been. Complete waste of my time and money to learn a hard lesson that these guys are real f*%&^@ tools.

Basically now I've decided that my hometown of Edmonton is not the kind of place I can get real work done to a real important guitar to me. I am need of a re-fret and I am interested in the real deal. I'm certainly not sending it to Gibson, but I'm thinking some place on the west coast of the states might be the place to have it done. Somewhere very reputable, somewhere that really cares, somewhere that isn't too cheap but isn't stupid expensive for what you get. I'm not sure whether or not I'd like the plek done... That being said I say it because of companys like Gibson butchering that shit just to throw the sticker on the pick-guard. I would not be opposed to having it done, but it had better be by someone who gives a shit about proving Gibsons methods wrong and that will do a mighty fine job. I haven't fully decided if I'd like to keep the binding nibs in tact but I find myself leaning towards just paying extra to do so. I'm not sold on it but I just can't explain it, this is has been and will be my main guitar and the aesthetics of it are very important to me. It's been the guitar I've loved to look at and play for a while and I knd of like it exactly the way it is.

Any input from anyone here would be greatly, greatly appreciated. A referral to a website or company or great luthier would be awesome! Thank-you for reading folks, have a good-one!

There has to be someone in Oilertown that can get that job done!!!!

  Oilertown...

Anywho I've heard of one decent guy, but only one "decent" recommendation. I'm really looking for a top notch job here. I'm willing to shell out to have my baby returned to me in better than new condition, I hope I'm not asking too much

Sorry to hear about all the crap you went through.

The main guy here in Nashville is Joe Glasier. He does work for Larry carlton, and pretty much everyone else in town. I have had him do fret work for me, and he does excellent work. If you send it to him, I would expect a refret to run 3 to 4 hundred. I would NOT, send it back to Gibson.

If you would like Joe's number, send me a PM. I'm not comfortable posting it as he does not advertise.

That really sucks man. Did you get your money back?

It is a royal PITA to send a guitar across the border for a repair and then getting it back into Canada after. If not done properly with the right paperwork, you'll land up paying tax on it AGAIN!! Better off to check in Vancouver or Toronto. Too bad your not in Montreal, I'd do it for you.

your LP had a stock bone nut
Most likely plastic.

Most definately bone. These guitars weren't crafted in Tennessee like most gibsons, they were made in Kalamazoo and were meant to be more of an ornate gibson originally made to be a +1 to the les paul customs of the time. The nut was original, and it was crafted out of bone.

And no I did not get my money back, these guys, clearly, are wanks. I wanted to walk right out after punching this dude out but I didn't have much choice. He told me they'd put a bone nut back in if I wasn't happy with the graphite nut but I can't trust my guitar there anymore and as silly as it may sound to some I don't want another 0.013" cut out of my first fret over these d-bags bs. I'm furious they would treat my guitar and I like this but anytime one of my buddies here asks me where to go to get their stuff serviced i'll be letting them know the experience I had there so over time they will lose business. Not much more I can do :gethim:

Thank-you for the reply's though everyone! I believe I may have found my guy in Portland, place called Portland fret works. I've heard a few great things about them. I am a little worried about paying customs both ways though because that's ridiculous so 12th fret just might be an option. I'm going to keep sending emails and looking around until I'm comfortable and then ship her off.
Once again, tanks RT

I'll just tell you it doesn't affect me either way but I have heard some bad experiences with PFW's. I would use the Twelfth Fret way before PFW's, but thats just me. I hope it turns out good either way.

Maybe you could pm Mark Day, I'm sure he knows of a good shop or two in Canada.

Annnnnnnd that just tipped the scales for me   . Thank-you very much GBS, pm sent!

Hey:

Just by sheer coincidence.....

I live in Toronto and use these guys exclusively for all my vintage stuff: http://www.12fret.com

And, yes, it's a different 12th Fret and it's in Toronto, so you wouldn't need to ship your guitar across the border - twice!

Give them a call and describe exactly what you're looking to have done. I'm sure they'll take care of ya', and they do top notch work. Don't waste your time emailing them, as the response could be VERY delayed.

Good luck!
