Has anyone has had the chance to compare the two how do you guys think they stack up to each other?

Thanks for chiming in fellas... Peter!!! I was hoping you would chime in and give us your opinion... have you had a chance to compare the two? I'm fairly new here (created account in November of 09 but didn't start posting til about 2 months ago) but it's such a pleasure to see a highly prestigious amp builder chime in here from time to time...

i'd be more interested in hearing how Peter feels about the Axe-FX taking on his tone.

Does it make you upset that people try to copy your signature tone that you worked so hard to create?

Funny you should say this... I actually wrote this in my response, but then deleted it... The thing is, no one can "stop" any company from modeling a particular sound... I could have sworn there was a legal case where the judge sided with a modeling company (or something to that nature)...

Hey Mo - I don't know if you played it when you were at my house, but I made a patch on the Axe using the 2/90/2 that was pretty close to my Herbert. I posted it up on the Fractal forums. It was close enough, for me, to the way I dialed the Herbert - that I ended up selling my Herbert. I'll miss that am (had it for 4 years) but for the little that I get to play these days and how close I could get the Axe to sound - it made sense to sell it.

Hey there Matt... I did try your patch but without the Fryette tube power amp goodness the patch sounded pretty dark (from what I remember)... Still can't believe your Herbert is gone! Didn't I read that your Mako is gone too?

Yeah. That patch is dark when I play it through the ART. With the Fryette, I compensate by boosting the Presence on the power-amp. But I like a darker tone in general. I should rework the patch with the ART. Maybe too with the latest software update that reworked the presence on the Axe. I always keep it neutral on the axe because I think it makes the tone too harsh when I turn it up. I prefer using the Fryette's presence.

Sold the Mak4, 2/90/2 and Herbert. Got a Peavy 6505 and 6534+ delivered today. Don't know if I'll keep them both. I've been wanting a 6505 because they are great metal amps and real cheap. The 6534+, I just wanted to try and I've read great things about it so far. Possibly getting a 20th Anniv. Bogner XTC. If I get that, the Uber will go.

I think Paul is going to sell his ENGL SE and pick up another VH4 - so you may get the chance to play the VH4 soon.

A friend of mine has an Axe-Fx Ultra (and I have one on the way). We did a direct comparison running the Axe and my VH4S thru Engl Pro cabs (2 on the Diezel and 1 on the Axe). To my ear I thought they sounded remarkably similar, but the Diezel had more of - what some people call - an "in the room" sound. I think what they mean is that it has a fuller presence somehow. That was my impression, anyway.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and the Ultra I'm adding to my rig will not replace my VH4S. I love that thing too much.

Nothing, is ever going to make your balls shake and the girls panties drop like a Diezel amp pushing air...Nothing. Diezel is a work of art that will shake your blood, not a computer gadget that sounds precious in your bedroom, I want an axe-fx but if I could buy a Herbert for the same price I would pick the Diezel EVERY time...

Not even in the same hemisphere. I thought Das Metal was an ENGL

Well the manual says "based on a high-gain, boutique German amplifier famous for its aggressive sound"... it's never been "officially" stated that it's a VH4 amp sim... but Cliff has never refuted it in all the time it's been mentioned here or on FAS's website. Is ENGL based in Germany too?

from the website :

Diezel VH4 ® DAS METAL
Based on a high-gain, boutique amplifier head famous for its powerful, heavy and aggressive sound.

ENGL Powerball® ENERGYBALL (lol )
Based on a very high-gain amplifier from Germany with lots of bass. Great for aggressive, drop-tuned riff work.

Wow... I haven't been on their website in a while (usually just visit the Wiki where I got this info from and the forum)... that's new (as far as I'm aware...) pretty cool to finally get confirmation on this model. Thanks for the heads up...
