Sleeper budget pick: Ceriatone Son of Yeti. I really want to try one of these. Cheap and the clips sound good.

These are great! I use one often. Killer little amp! Hand wired and $699.

Not a popular or well regarded amp builder, but I like this Krank Nineteen80 Jr. 20 watt amp head that I bought online a few years ago. It has killer a Marshall JCM 800 style overdrive channel with a sweep EQ that acts like a parametric EQ and a clean channel with 2 band EQ. The 20 watts output allows to crank the amp up without having an overbearing volume towards the band or audience.

I was trying to find another Krank Nineteen80 Jr. amp head in the 50 watt version, but couldn't find one. I did find this Stiff 90-AD 50 watt amp, 2 channel amp head made by Tony Krank which is basically a 50 watt version of the Krank Nineteen80 Jr. amp head in a lunchbox amp chassis. It sounds just like the Krank Nineteen80 Jr. 20 watt amp head that I have with a 50 watt output. My only issue with is that it doesn't have a 16 ohm output. I might have to ask my local amp tech to install one for me.

I listened to a bunch of Nineteen80 jr clips... and I like what I hear! Looks like a hard amp to find, though :gethim:

MESA Mini Rectifier

Fantastic low to high gain tones.
Friendly price , especially used.
No boost needed.

To my raised-eyebrow surprised the amp got me closest to the Van Halen tone on Unchained than most others.

Yes, they're hard to find. People for some reason caught on to it. I've seen the Nineteen80 50 watt combo amp which is rare come up for sale on Reverb and it disappeared quick. The same thing with the Nineteen80 80 watt amp heads. The matching 4x12 cabs had a salt & pepper grill cloth like a vintage Marshall and came OEM with Eminence Governor speakers.

For awhile, the Krank Nineteen80 80 watt amp heads were endorsed by Frank Hannon & Dave Rude of Tesla and Michael Wilton of Queensryche. There's a YouTube demo video of Frank Hannon giving the Nineteen80 Jr. 50 watt combo amp a test run at the Krank amp show room.

The son of yetti is interesting. Kinda want...

Checked out a bunch of clips this afternoon. Not gonna lie, it has what I'm looking for

Another vote for the EVH 50. But get a V2 with separate volumes and gains. Hell of an amp. Love mine. Paired with a Boss MS3, hard to beat portable little rig. Either at home quietly or at a gig, i delivers.

I'll probably end up with either a 5153 50w or lunchbox. Seems to be the simplest solution for what I really want...

Personnaly, id go with the 50 watts. 3 full channels and no compromise. Easilly giggable also. The lunchbox wont cut it with a loud drummer if not miked.

The 50 watts also has the oomph compared to the lunchbox.

Good luck.

Any experience/opinions with the 6L6 vs EL34 variants?

I had the 100 watts EL34 and i could not bond with it. Way to much gain for me. The cleans where phenomenal. The blue channel had way too much gain, as the red too. Sounded good but i found it was too saturated. I had to keep the gain super low for my tastes. And the gain channels had bleedthrough with the gain knobs, was bugging me.They should of lowered the gain. Make it more crunchy, imo.

Now i never tried the 50W EL34. Cant say anything about it.

I would love to try that Kruse mod. Id snag that.

Not my experience at all.
One, to me it sounded quite flubby in the low-end; I tested the Ironball after that -which delivered- and bought that on the spot.
Two, nowhere near 80's Marshall tones to be had. Now the Mesa Mini Mark V25 in Crunch mode, THAT's 80's hotrodded Marshall roar.
