SICK playing... awesome amp.. are you still a big advocate of the SH-11 in the bridge? What is up top in the neck?

Actually that's just a Suhr Aldrich in the bridge and a Dimarzio Air Norton S pickup in the neck.

I spent a bunch of time with warmer/darker sounding pickups like the SH-11 and SD Holdsworth (alnico2 JB) for example... and decided that ultimately for me.. Dark pickups in a Strat take away too much of the liveliness and bite, leaving you with a boring sounding guitar. Instead, I just go with a pickup that just gives me a little more of what the guitar already has. If the guitar is naturally too bright or too dark.. I just sell it and move on. It's gotta sound 99% spot on in the first place and then I can just enhance it a little bit with a pickup swap if necessary :)

That was my feeling with the SH-11 as well... too woofy and smooth. I prefer bite. That makes it hard however to deal with brighter guitars.

The problem with a very bright guitar is that nothing will fix that, short of changing the neck or body etc. You can use 250k pots or dark pickups, but all that does is kill the dynamics and make the thing sound dead  So it's easier to just sell the thing and find something that isn't overly bright..

Luckily my Charvel is perfectly balanced tone-wise.. Plenty of low end but also plenty of mids and treble too. So it's bright enough to really cut through and also be harmonically rich, while still being beefy on the low end/mids too

awesome, that sounded great. Digging your dbl grommet strap too!

The one thing I will say about those charvels that they did / do in Japan is that they seem to at least be consistent. Mine had a volume knob and a JB which you'd think might be bright , but it was a perfect combo and the wood was nicely balanced. you don't hear too many complaints about them being ice pick guitars. I now wish i had just changed the neck and kept the body and hardware. Oh well..

Yeah they do seem to be fairly consistant sounding guitars, mine had a ToneZone in it when it was stock and it sounded killer.. Just decided i wanted a more open sounding pickup so i put an Aldrich in there. Definitely very balanced sounding guitars, i love mine! :)
