recto boosts...and griff10672's killer pedal thread...

Integrated preamp and it’s various clones (like the pepers) is my favorite boost with my recto. Works so well with it. Tubescreamer of some kind is a close second but I tune down a lot so just a TS is usually not tight enough for me. An eq with it to cut extra lows works great. So much hype around boutique overdrives but a TS and GE7 and some patience and you can cop their sound 90% of the time.

I have modded various tubescreamers and my favorite one is just a ts9 clone I made on tagboard but with LEDs for clipping diodes (higher forward voltage than 1n4148 diodes so the pedal has higher volume) and a pot in parallel with the 4k7 resistor that forms the low cut. Reducing the total value with a parallel resistance raises the low cut frequency and also increases the gain (so you don’t get a volume drop as the low cut increases). It’s like having a very effective ‘tight’ knob, and all the way up at its tightest setting is almost as tight as the integrated preamp with bass at 0.
also the pedal Chris(sdmf38) is letting me try out is that style I believe. Integrated preamp....forgot to mention that. Maybe he will chime in. He's truly a man of exquisite tastes...and he has many leather bound books...and his place smells of rich mahogany. He's kind of a big deal. Just sayin...

I like it for when I need that sound . Especially DT . DT knobs are so strong that pedal works best with very low settings
Yeah I hear you. I guess I just feel the Fortin TS’s or Protone Dino is to me better for what I think of as “that sound”, but those aren’t perfect to either. The vintage Audioarts 4100 rack PQ also can be dialed in well for that with an inherent tone that imo is light years more rich and organic to my ears

There’s so many good ones !

I prefer the old tried and true TS9 with a Recto. The MXR GT-OD is a great pedal on the cheap as well. I can send you mine if you want to try it out!

thanks broseph-I'm g2g for now. I'll have my hands on a couple sweet ones pretty soon.

So I was throwing all the boost I could find lying around against my triple rec tonight. So playing direct in to a Suhr RL into an interface with IR's I was digging the Friedman boost, the Fortin modded CUDA and the VFe Standout v2 the most. I was kinda surprised about the Standout v2 cause usually I like v1 more. The Fortin modded Maxon OD9 was also really good and made it sound really aggressive AF.

I was a surprised the Dirty Tree didn't do it for me BUT that might be because im not playing thru my cabs. What works and sounds good for direct recording almost never translates well when I play thru may cabs and vice versa... with that said I know my buddy loves his 33 with his dual rec which I heard many times at full volume thru a 4x12 but you need to dial in the amp around the 33 to get that and I was feeling lazy lol. I had my amp on the orange channel, 100w Raw/bold mode.

Maybe I have a more pessimistic view hahaha, but I try to be realistic even if it offends (no diplomatic bs with me). Honestly having been through over 150 boosts now, the vast majority of them to me left a lot to be desired, but there may have been 1 or 2 particular ones that can spoil the rest lol. I’ve had 6 that I’ve kept for now plus 3 vintage rack PQ’s

Very cool shootout you got there! No experience myself with using IR's (and no plans to), but I agree with a lot of that from my experience. If you think that Fortin modded OD9 is aggressive af though (and it is) wait till you try the latest 808 version, but like the 33 you gotta dial your amp in more around the pedal, but well worth imo. It has the most aggressive midrange I've heard in a pedal. Never heard of this Fortin modded CUDA, but that sounds like it could quite cool! Would be curious to hear it. For me the Standout v1 I had sent the 33 packing immediately, but didn't ultimately keep it either. I agree on the Dirty Tree. It's good functionally speaking, but was just inherently way too clinical and filtered/inorganic sounding to be enjoyable/inspiring for me. You may have picked up on that since you did your homework with these AB comparisons that expose the good and bad qualities in each one. Much respect for that

Had the Fortin 33. Agree. To me it lost the big low end and made it real minds heavy. The Rectifier has a wonky EQ section to start with. It’s almost as if they aren’t independent. If you change A it changes B.
It does tighten it up.

Dirty tree also sounds great with my Trem O Verb as well.

Here's my problem...I've been ampless for awhile. So I have been using stl amphub. As far as the amp sims-dual rec, framus dragon and cobra, and the krankenstein. Mesa and Hiwatt cab models. And I constantly use the chainsaw eq(boss hm2) downtuned to drop c or b standard. So when I plugged in the t-verb I was like shit....I need a boost. and I also need a hm-2 or a variant as well. God I love that sound.

Yes the Swedish chainsaw they call it. I’ve got an original ‘80’s MIJ. I don’t use it often, but when I do it’s an awesome sound in its own terrible way haha. So bad it’s good
