I think we did "Damn the River" at the Amp fest I hosted this summer.....
Jimmie From RIGTALK here....did the vocals....and it was AWESOME!

Well you can't just lead me on like that without posting a clip

I think it sounds good, but the tones aren't really similar (mostly the first - the second one is definitely closer).
The original seems like it has less overall mids and more treble - but not just "more"...it's like the treble is extended into a higher range. There's probably a blend of condenser mic and dynamic on the original track, run through high-dollar preamps, as well as blending several amps together.

The main difference that I notice, though, is the feel of the track - the original definitely sounds like a cranked amp. It has a lot of give and kind of a splash (in my head, it sounds like GLANG) to it that you just can't get from an amp at low volumes. The Recto definitely sounds like a low-volume recording - it just doesn't have that signature recto greasy feel that you get when you open those amps up.

Also - you can't talk about album tone without talking about the affect that recording gear has on the sound that comes out of your speakers. Jerry's rig was recorded in a professional studio in a room that was designed to sound "good" and the sound was captured via one or many high-end microphones through their own high-end mic pres onto magnetic tape, then mixed on a high-end console and mastered by a professional with many thousands of dollars of surgical mastering equipment. Every single step in that chain imparts its own sonic signature onto the sound, and I guaran-damn-tee that every single aspect was controlled within an inch of its life by set of professionals who make big bucks because they're the best at what they do.

No matter how good you are, you're simply not going to capture that kind of sonic chain in your home studio with an SM57 and a $500 interface.

And FWIW, Nate is full of shit.

Dan has no such "less metal" mode.
He only has MORE metal and MORER METAL.

Shooting for the late spring early Summer.....

I was going for a quick Marshally vibe at the time. This clip was actually recorded with volumes pretty high, but it wasn't terribly loud because I was on 'Raw' mode channel 2 which apparently cuts a lot of volume. Output was around 12-1, channel volume around 1-2 and recorded by a Heil PR20. Any tips on getting a more Recto sound Six?

Yeah, that's plenty of volume...are you using 6L6s in the Recto?
34s will help to get a little more give, as well as Spongy and Tube rectification...of course, with 34s, you lose a bit of high end, which, to me, is probably the biggest tonal difference between the clips.

I'd try to play with mic position ans see if you can get more high end without getting fizzy, or try the trick where you turn the presence all the way down and crank up the Treble...or the opposite.
