So I scored a MF280 cab for a great price...except, when I cracked it open it, G12K-85s. The cab has the MF280 badge on both the front and back and does not appear tampered with. It sounds good, just not my flavor. And these look like the old GK12-85s.

I play modded Marshalls / Friedmans, and I really like Friedman 4x12's I've played, so I just scored two V30s (Chinese) and am looking for something to put up top...or maybe an x-pattern. I've been listening to nearly countless videos of comparisons between Greenback variants and the one I like the most is the Greenback RI 12M from China. ...But that 25 watts kinda scares me. I rarely get to the 4x12 these days and cranking isn't something I get to do often, so maybe the 25 RI's are the way to go.

Anyway, just curious about what you guys like for higher power Greenback variants. Based on all the clips where there are comparisons to the RI Greenback, the Creamback M65 is good, but pretty different from the RI. Scumback M75 isn't too bad. Creamback H75 is also good and probably better in a mix vs. the M65. I heard Cantrell uses Creamback M65s on top / V30s bottom. I play a JJ100 when I gig with my H75/V30 2x12 and that's a good combo.

Cheers.

Love me some K85's.

Truthfully, the Chinese V30/M25 combo in the Friedman and Bogner cabs I have is one of my favorites. You really don't notice the GB breakup as much when it's paired with the v30 at high volume/gain settings. They're a fantastic combo, as the GB evens the V30 spike out a bit.

Your getting my V30s because I swapped the top 2 out for 2 G12/25C I just scored. They are the C versions of greenbacks that were used in Jimi Hendrix cabs and the Vintage modern cabs. Evens out the V30s. Nicer highs and mids, and the V30s handle the lows. You played the Friedman cab as have I, so you have a good idea how it will sound. Sounds great.

FYI you speakers are on the way. Should get them Thursday.

I hate mixing speakers, just makes things less direct and hazy sounding.

Yup. Those who disagree just haven't realized it yet.

I have never mixed speakers in a cab, but i have a 4x12 of v30s below a 4x12 of evh greenbacks and I like the blend. The only thing I would worry with mixing the gbs in the v30 cab is the total watt drops to the level of the weakest speaker, so you have to worry if your amp is over 100 watts, assuming you play loud.

Friedman and Bogner sell the mix cabs for their 100 watt heads. Never heard of them blowing out

This is my current speaker set up installed in a used Marshall JCM 900 1960A slant cab with 2 Celestion G12C (pulled from a Marshall Vintage Modern 4x12 cab, purchased from a TGP forum member) and 2 Celestion Vintage 30 speakers ( one is English, one is MIC). I can totally agree with you on how the 2 different speaker voicings complement each other. The sound of my cab with the Celestion G12C/Vintage 30 speakers isn't hazy or less direct sounding in any way. I also run my cab with a Rocktron Vendetta 100 watt tube amp head, but I'm careful of my volume.

over 100 > 100

I ALWAYS pop the back off when I get a cab. Just figured that was worth noting.

Yup, should have done that. I brought my head and it sounded good and it was really cheap. The cab is solid! I just don't love the 85s with all my heads. ...But definitely lesson learned. If they won't pop it open before I buy, I won't do business with the seller.

I hate vintage 30s by themselves, but mixing them with cream backs is awesome. I got a bogner 2x12 and my Friedman kills through it.

IME, some speakers just don't mix with others but there are good combos.

For example, ime old GBs/CBs/BBs mix well...really well. But they're fairly similar to begin with.

If you mix vastly different sounding speakers...results can vary widely. And if you stand in front and try to hear the G12T-75 vs the V30...you'll hear it and it might drive you nuts. But step off to the side and it's all good...ime.

I think speaker selection has a lot to do with the amp. When I had my 5150, the greenbacks worked really well with it. But with my Soldano, they were too dark. Every amp I have had has sounded really good with v30s. But I understand they are vastly overused to the point of maybe being boring for others. I feel like speakers that emphasize my amp's lower mids are what are probably going to appeal to me, so I guess it is more about pairing with the amp's voicing. After that, I am ok with any speaker that accentuates a different piece of the eq as long as it blends. It seems to give a fuller sound.
