Replacing Mesa oversized 4x12 speakers.. what to expect?

I live in BFE and there are not only no music stores around me but also no players. Since shipping is way too much for cabs now my only choice is to try and change out the speakers.

Basically I hate v30s. Im looking to replace them with GT75s since my amp is voiced for those speakers. Problem is I have no idea what to expect by just replacing the cab speakers. I suppose I could get dimensions of the cab and see what other cabs match it to get a broader idea of tones. Anyways, has anyone ever tried this?

The thing i cant stand about v30s is the way they break up. They have this grit to them that I find very unnatural. Also they are extremely dark and I can never find a good balance between highs and bass.

Have you considered swapping two V30s for GT75s in an X pattern (ala Bogner's Uberschall cab)?

I certainly have. It is not a bad idea at all. I think im going to just do it regardless of how bad it sucks.. :scared: so..

Anyone have some G12T-75s for sale?

i'd suggest trying some dampning material like the Bogner cabs have, maybe just put it in there without stapling and see if you like it. i got some homemade cabs that are about the same size as the Mesa oversized with the dampning in them, and they sound great.

guess your V30's are 8ohm? need to know anyways what they are, most 75's around will probably be 16ohm?

The cab is 8ohm. Im guessing 8 but I will have to pull the back to find out for sure. Honestly I want different speakers. I have had this cab now for 8 years and im tired of the v30s. I'll try an X pattern first but my head was designed specifically for G12T-75s

i would definatley try dampening first.

I've done this. Honestly it sounded... not so good. I've done about everything to completely pervert the sound of a Mesa 4x12 and the best it's sounded was with two V30s and two Greenbacks in an x pattern. I've had all sorts of different mixes in mine - v30s, 75s, greenbacks, h30s, etc... with foam batting, without foam batting, different impedences, you name it.

Sounded best with all speakers at 8 ohms, two V30s and two greenbacks - no batting.

Cool! Those are red coats? Got any clips? I would be most interested. :D Also, what kind of sonic change did you get?

I'll have to think on it a little more.

But I might put my 2 G12 T75s up for sale or trade

they are 8-9 months old, done a few gigs <3, mostly recording.

didn't like the sound of them mic'd, sounds great mixed with V30s in the room.

They are 8 ohms.

Pm me and we can talk.

yeah they are "private jack" speakers. 16 ohms with 16ga monster cable. just over an inch of non foam batting. it kind of smoothed the sound out a little. it definatley wasnt a bad change for me. and the speakers are for sale too if your interested :D . i see in your pic you have a plexi head. thats what these speakers excel at. they definatley wouldnt work with a 5150 or recto type head. and sorry i dont have any clips. they are the same thing Roccaforte is loading his cabs with now.

No electric guitar speakers sound "natural." No electric instrument can sound "natural."

Mimic...
