Reverb Shipping Scam?

Saw an amp on Reverb I was interested in. Seller wanted $3,000 + $300 for shipping. $300, WTF. So I make an offer of $2500 + $300 shipping, since I figure $2800 shipped is a good offer. Seller counters with $2600 + $200 shipping. I don't get it. Same price in the end. Why the counter? Why the shipping markup? Is it to save on Reverb fees or something?

Also I told the seller I think $300 for shipping an amp is a BIT on the high side. I just got a shipping quote for an amp today for $86 with USPS. He responds with some nonsense about how he recognizes my name from here on Rig-Talk and how my days of trolling are over. I cut ties and said good luck with the sale. Seemed super weird...
 
It sounds to me like you just avoided a major headache. Cagey Sellers like this should be avoided at all costs imo.

As far as I can tell from my payouts, Reverb hits the Shipping with their fees as well. So if you sold something for $100 + free shipping or $93 + $7 Shipping, you're still getting $6.25 taken out in fees no matter what.

The guy's just being a weirdo, you get a discount when shipping through reverb.. The last 3 guitars I shipped out through reverb cost $43, $48 and $64 with the additional "Reverb Protection". UPS/FEDEX/USPS directly wanted $30-40+ more.
 
Yeah sounds like a nut to put on the avoid list...
 
feel free to post the nickname of the seller to know whom we should avoid, it's really suspicious
 
Wow that's definitely fishy. Also, if you use Reverb to print a label you save a ton. Last time I sold an amp I saved almost 50% using Reverb, no way shipping should have come close to that cost. Scam.
 
No scam. People do it to recoup fees, that's all. Silly, yes. It's the same as people here asking for an extra 3.5% on top of their asking price to cover fees.

Personally, I generally avoid people who ask $300 for shipping. It screams unreasonable/out of touch with reality right off the bat.
 
So if you return it for whatever reason, you only get back the total price minus the 2-300? No thanks. Probably a good way to deter people from returning shady gear

That would make sense EXCEPT he was willing to take my offer of $2800 shipped, just with it split between super expensive shipping and a lower product price, which doesn't make any rational sense. What is the difference between $2500 + $300 shipping and $2600 + $200 shipping and $2800 + free shipping? So he countered my offer with... the same offer? And then makes a weird comment about me being a troll on RT?

I looked his name up on FB and yeah... seems like a strange character so I bailed on the purchase.
 
He was able to counter without lowering his price, that was his point. Instant DB move, I'd avoid him too.

Definitely. Not a good way to make a sale. I'm sure someone else will take the bait.
 
And if you file a shipping claim you get the reduced sale price, not shipping costs from what I understand. The bottom line is these jackwagons want to add unnecessary complexities to save just a few dollars
 
If he knows you from rig Talk is his reverb selling name the same here?
Or is that amp listed here as well.

It was already mentioned.... any return is minus shipping costs. Seems the seller is concerned about a return, so in order to make it worth “selling” tack on the high shipping fee and if it comes back, pocket a few hundred bucks. Do this 2-3 times and it’s a nice money making scheme.

At lest your not in Canada... His Canadian shipping is $823!!!!
