ha! this is fascinating because after hanging out with Uli Jon Roth for 3 days and having the pleasure ( more pain!) to sub tech for him while his own tech was late on arrival on one show, i couldve believe what I was dealing with! At least John Norum has a pedal board! Uli travels with a suitcase that looks like something from the 70's and its literally a pile of cheap cables and cheap pedals thrown in! He actually borrowed my MXR Carbon Copy which i happened to have on hand because the two that he had were non functional due to not taking good care of them. the other winner of pedal was a beat up Octavia pedal that didnt even have a bottom seal on it and had foam taped to it to avoid electrical shock. Dunlup wah was a standard cheapy and digitech whammey was barely used. there was a tube screamer in there too that was just purchased at the local guitar center, but rarely used. His Amps were a 1959 Super Lead Reissue and Framus Cobra both set at clean stock setting, but so loud that Im positive you could damage your ear drums if u sat in front of cab. Meanwhile he makes Yngwie look like a puppy dog when it comes to demands abd controlling behavior. Patch cords are from radio shack, its ridiculous and nothing ever goes smooth in hoooking up his sky guitar ( sophisticated PU system that has its own external power source). The good news is that he sounded amazing and played shit that would make your head spin! I got my balls busted so hard, I almost said fuck it, but later he gave me a hug and said did u have fun? : )

Ant

In all seriousness
Uli Is King
and his tone is in his fingers

Don'tcha wanna talk about my Two Rock?

What's a Two Rock?

It's an amp that goes great with certain Chilean wines, and even better with Kona Coffee.

Dude WTF his wife RIP had better gear then he does, what did he do with her stuff?
Zakk gave her a ZW JCM 800,I was there,Mandalay Foundry room.
I'm sure he has it.

I've got a broken DD-2 I can send him so he can get rid of that crappy rack delay he's using. I really hope he gets his act together and gets some serious gear. He'll never be a good player until he does.

You know what's sad? At the end of the day Norum, Shenker, Roth, could all sound killer and play to 30,000 people through a shitty little Marshall practice amp and a cheap delay pedal that is pumped through a PA system and we'd all be on forums asking how the hell they got such killer live tone! Norum has played basic setups from the beginning. Strats-OD-delay-Plexi's in the early days.. I hate this saying but "tone is in the fingers" totally applies here. :( Now ol Lynch on the other hand.. how would he sound through a practice amp?!

Am I in the minority here? I actually kind of like the 2205!

This thread has zero credibility until we get word from Tag as to what He thinks we ought to do regarding Norum.

Tag knows.

I disagree completely with the saying "tone is in the fingers". I think more accurately that a great player can sound great and play like himself through any reasonably similar rig to his own. Simple rigs rule

John Norum is so fucking good that it doesn't matter what he plays through..the guy just kills and has chops for day..super talented

All amps should come with the following sticker:

"Chops and talent not included"

Instant Awesome!!! Just add chops

I felt most sorry for Norum in that his pedals weren't modded for true bypas or put into a fancy loop switching box!?!?!?!

he used off the shelf ceramic magnet non handwound pickups as well

And the worst crime against humanity is he didn't have a boost pedal or overpriced tubescreamer clone goosing the front of his amp

After the recent thread about John Norum with the video of him walking through his gear, I was heartbroken. John is one of my favorite players and I just can't stand to see players of his caliber suffering. I won't discuss his rack of Les Paul's because some of you guys love those things. Personally, I feel like I'm strapped into a medieval torture device while playing one, but that is subjective.

But his amps and pedals. Oh for the love of humanity. The uninformed Mr. Norum is playing JCM800's so you might think, "well okay, he's on the right track". But no. He is playing the 2205 version of the JCM800. Those have diode clipping in them and as a result can only sound crappy. And Norum is such a sucker that when Michael Schenker got tricked into buying a 2205, he then tricked Norum into buying it from him. Talk about amp flipping. And Norum was the unfortunate recipient of that cast off from Schenker. And Norum has three of those 2205's. I'm sure all acquired through dumpster diving from stores that decided they needed smaller door stops.

And for all that is holy, the guy's pedalboard has a Dunlop Crybaby in it. Not a Teese, not a Fulltone, not a Budda, not even a Dunlop 535Q or vintage Thomas Organ era Cry Baby wah. Just a $69 Crybaby wah. And then to add insult to injury, he has a Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble next to it. Just some crappy, Made In Taiwan Boss pedal. Doesn't he know you can't play that Taiwanese Boss crap? At least get a made in Japan one and send it in for a hundred dollar mod that doesn't make it sound like the pedal it's supposed to be anymore. And that's it. You call that a pedalboard? he could go into any pawn shop on the planet and grab a used Crybaby and Boss CE-5 for less than $100.

Now in all fairness, the guy has only appeared on 50 different commercial releases so he's still a little wet behind the ears and just probably hasn't had as much of a chance to read about gear as the rest of us. He needs our help. Just like Akira Takasaki that I started an intervention thread for crappy gear about a couple of weeks ago, Mr. Norum needs our help. Let's all join together and shine a light where there is none, give a clue where there is only cluelessness, and give hope to the hopeless.

Warning: This video will bring tears to the eye of even the most hardened gear expert. Please watch as much as you can before turning away in despair. And be thankful for how much we have and how much we know, but always remember those that are less fortunate than us and don't have as busy of recording or touring schedules. Thank you very much.

Well are you really serious on this? If you really mean this maybe you forgot it´s not in the gear it´s in the hands and the mind of the player. Guys like John Norum sound good whatever they play through because they really can play. And this gear you call crap sounds really good in the right hands. Bottom line his main sound is just his guitar and amps. And Marshall 2205´s can sound real good. About the diodes in them almost every guitarist that use distortion boxes also uses diodes so what is the difference?

I bet that poor bastard even uses regular 2 ply toilet tissue and not silk cloth like a proper man uses.
The nerve of some people.

What?? You couldn't afford the Three Rock??! pssssshhhhh

Both are merely poor man's substitutes for the real thing - the one and only Dumble ODS. If an amp isn't made by a notoriously unbusinesslike guru with a strong concern for the fragile harmonics, I don't want it :D

My word, what a poor bastard...Watching this video makes me feel worse than when I'm eating dinner and one of those starving African kid commercials come on with Susan Sarandon :aww: Someone should start a fund for him, I'd definitely send 50 cents a day to help this guy who is obviously in dire need.

what?!!? WHAT?!??

Norum gives up an ENTIRE RACK SPACE for Joey's Wireless?!??

Someone contact Bradshaw... This guy needs a refrigerator full of shit that will fail at random times in front of those 2205's for chrisakes!!! Whats WRONG with you people?!???
